So, I was thinking. You want to go for a ride, and you don't want to retrace your steps. You know how long you want to be out for.

There's no app for that.

Enter 'Circular Route Planner' or Icirclez (for teh gayphonez) or Circuloid (for the clever man's smartphone) or whatever you want to call it.

Bung in your start point, distance you want to go (or speed and time you want to be out) and it'll plot a random route for you.

I'd like it by this time next week please, with full functionality, in the Android Market, and I'll pay up to but not including £1.00 for it.

Thankyouplease. Thumbs Up

Thats a great idea, I get bored doing the same routes.

Is it actually possible though?

You mean like going to google maps on your smart android phone and doing this which takes all of 20 seconds.

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=crewe&daddr=newcastle+under+lyme+to:market+drayton+to:crewe&hl=en&geocode=FZAqKgMd2L3a_ylHSFRSMEV6SDE6uIg3cNCeDw%3B%3BFUtBJwMd2Bja_ylt4saaB2F6SDHRPKf5-VVHzA%3BFZAqKgMd2L3a_ylHSFRSMEV6SDE6uIg3cNCeDw&mra=ls&sll=53.94058,-1.950325&sspn=2.40585,4.916382&ie=UTF8&z=11

I suppose you could do similar with google maps (although it would take a bit longer)

Put in your home address/start point and just look at the maps and select several 'vias' and put your home address/finish point in. It will then take you on the route going via the places you selected.

I think google maps can be set to avoid motorways (not sure about dual carriageways though) and if you fancy a different route next time, just select different points/places to go via.

Everyone knows Yorkshire = Mother is sister, father = brother.

Cheshire is just plain win. 20mins from wales epic roads
1 hour from Manchester
1 hour from Birmingham.

Oh and Zero police presence round here.

Wales = They all talk funny

Brummy = The white are the ethnic minority

Manchester = Just strange, end of Very Happy

You may not have much police but North Yorkshire is (or was) the only county with no fixed speed scameras Wink

Back on topic, in the land where southern fairies can still speak to northern shandies....

You'd be missing the point if you put in places you want to go. The point is, you find NEW roads, NEW places and so on. You simply put a distance or a time in and you get a route that sticks as close as possible to it....

Not necessarily, if you just looked at the map/google maps or whatever and just find some random places that you've never even heard of (and there will be some fairly near to you) and put them into the 'via' bit.

It will give you the time it takes to roughly complete the route and how far it is.

It really doesn't take long to look at google maps and say I wanna go there, there and there.

Get it roughly to the right timing. Knock off 20minutes per hour if your planning on riding "exuberantly" and away you go.

I know exactly what he is saying and what sort of app he is looking for. But i'm afraid i don't think one exists and i don't think one ever will either.

I don't know much about the code or whatever that goes into google maps but i can imagine it being quite hard to create and app that the OP is after.

Not forgetting that it's not hard to do what me and ally are suggesting Wink

If I was going for a ride, I wouldn't use for Desire to plan a route anyway, I would just ride towards somewhere random and then use it to get back home.

If I knew somewhere I wanted to go, I would aim my bike roughly in that direction and go.

Using a satnav from home is teh ghey

Well if YOU wanted to do this by YOURSELF YOU wouldn't ask on a PUBLIC forum now would YOU!

Just giving MY own opinion.

What you are asking for is similar to the traveling salesman problem:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travelling_salesman_problem

Quote:
In the theory of computational complexity, the decision version of TSP belongs to the class of NP-complete problems. Thus, it is assumed that there is no efficient algorithm for solving TSPs. In other words, it is likely that the worst case running time for any algorithm for TSP increases exponentially with the number of cities, so even some instances with only hundreds of cities will take many CPU years to solve exactly.

Only instead of cities to visit, you want to specify a distance and have it plan a route between and unknown number of points in a vast set of possible points to conform to a specified distance. The program won't know the distance until it has calculated the route...

I'm also guessing you will want to be able to specify A roads, B roads, Motorways, toll roads, avoiding city centers, random routes every time etc.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's certainly not straight forwards and isn't the type of thing that could be hacked together by a bored teenager in an afternoon, so your offer of payment is unlikely to attract a serious software engineer who is shit hot on graph theory, Android coding and interaction with google maps Laughing

See, like I said.

Years of CPU work or a minute on google maps.

Your choice UknownStuntman, if that is your real name.

In reality it's not going to be years of CPU work, there are clever little things that you can do to reduce it down to just a few seconds, maybe less. But the knowledge required to do it is not possessed by your average code hacker Wink

Well obviously!

In fact, what I'd hoped for was some "bored teenager" to find the exact piece of software for me and say something smart, like "Hey, it already exists, dumbass, it's called MoJoBoRideSloGo..."

I never expected to get someone seriously on the case with the offer of up to but not including one British pound.... And much, much less "attract a serious software engineer who is shit hot on graph theory" here on BCF. I'm well aware the majority of users here fall into the category already mentioned above!

But think for a moment or two - wouldn't it be facking cool? Cool
