Bike failed an MOT today. Apparently the HID kit installed isn't alligned properly. The left is fine (beams off to the left) but the right side shouldnt beam off to the right but should be in a straight line...

And also the "beams are too high"

I looked on Google and found some info regarding taping the headlights to alter the beam pattern and put it through a re-test. Would this work? and if so someone help please Mr. Green

Hi

HID kits are not road legal.

Problem for the MOT is that the bit that emits the light can easily be in a different place to a conventional bulb, rendering the beam pattern pretty random (only takes the bulb to be a tiny bit out of position to screw things up), and tape isn't really going to fix that.

All the best

Keith

Kickstart the HID's weren't a direct replacement for the stock bulbs, they are inside projectors so "tame" the beam so the actual beam pattern is fine its just that the projectors were designed to kick the light off to the left (legal requirements) but the right one kicks the light off to the right (not legal due to possibly blinding the oncoming) this can be sorted out by using masking tape but I was wondering if the MOT will pass with the headlights half taped up lol

Just think of the oncoming traffic you've been blinding....

Hi

They probably will pass it with the lens taped up. However the beam pattern is due to the shape of the lens and reflector, so changing the bulb should make it dip another way.

All the best

Keith

LOL Ian I promise it doesn't blind oncoming traffic it is only a slight tilt in the beam to the right.

And Kickstart do I tape the headlights to "fix" the beam pattern or can I just tape the whole thing up?

You need to tape it up to fix the problem, not just tape the entire light up..

I've had an (import) bike pass an MOT with a bit of tape on the headlight to stop blinding the wrong people. You'll find that the tape will need to be cut into a triangle for best results.

Assuming they're your standard projector retro fits, can't you either rotate the whole unit, or dissasemble it then rotate the cutoff shield?

Yes that's what I thought to do but believe me I would do ANYTHING to not have to hide all those wires again lol

And to carvell...

Could you help me out on the taping technique? Or alternatively can't I just disconnect the ballast and tape up the whole right headlight so it isn't tested? or are there other problems to this? (high beam wouldnt be a prob as they are bi-xenon and act as both high/low beam)

I seem to recall form reading the MOT manual that only one headlight needs to actually function - have a look through the testers' manual:
https://www.transportoffice.gov.uk/crt/doitonline/bl/mottestingmanualsandguides/mottestingmanualsandguides.htm

With regards to taping it up, you need to point the headlight at a garage door and see where it's bright on the right hand side of the light. You then need to put some opaque tape on the light that covers this bright bit on the right.

Have a see if you can get away with disabling the light though.

MOT Manual wrote:
Twin headlamp systems.
On twin headlamp systems only one or both headlamps may need to be illuminated for either dipped or main beam. Each headlamp that can be illuminated on dipped beam must meet the requirement for dipped beam headlamps. Twin headlamps must be mounted either one above the other or symmetrically without regard to any sidecar and not more than 200mm apart measured from the edge of the reflecting surface. The tester should advise if both headlights should illuminate for either function and only one does so

Looks like you may be able to get away with disabling it if push comes to shove.

Hi

From the link Carvell posted it looks like you could disconnect the dodgy aimed light on dipped beam. Claim it is only a main beam light. Tester might advise it isn't right but shouldn't be a failure.

All the best

I'l have a read on the link posted. Thanks for your help guys Wink

My bikes my only transport so I defo need to sort it out asap Sad

If disabling the right side works then I think Il just pull out the ballast connection and it's sorted. Do I still need to tape it up if it's disconnected?

Technically, no.

You may get some grief off the tester, but according to the manual it should pass.

MOT due next month so will be taping it up again BEFORE it gets tested Wink
