I've bought a ZX-6R and it was fitted with a new chain and sprocket by Kawasaki when I bought it. I've travelled just short of 1000 miles since but I was wondering... what is the recommended mileage for a chain or chain and sprocket change on these bikes?

I didn't get a manual with my purchase (I'm ordering one) so I cannot check this unfortunately. Any advice would be appreciated!! Confused

Thanks peoples!! Very Happy

Yep it all depends on the amount of power you use day to day.

I still have the original chain on my 08 R1 and has covered 8 trackdays, lots of hoons, 2 trips to Le Mans and back a total of 17000 miles to date and it still has plenty of life left in in. And I am not light handed with the bike

I've recently changed the original on my 2000 CBR600. Bike had 18k on the clock.

as others have said there is no set mileage, keep it well lubricated and clean and it will last ages.

Adjust the change when the slack becomes excessive, not really a requirement to check by the annual mileage the book says. Its one of those things to check and adjust when necessary

Just changed my 01 CBR6f chain and sprockets, a bit of life left in the sprockets but the chain was knackered - bike is at 18k.

I've just changed my C&S which had about 25k on it. The chain and rear sprocket weren't so bad, but the front sprocket was pretty worn. My "sporadic" oiling of the chain probably didn't help matters

Chain and sprockets should be as a must replaced as a set, a worn sprocket on new chain will ruin it quickly Exclamation

I'm not thrashing the bike, I'm riding steady cos I need it as my main form of transport. So it looks like I've got a fair few miles in the chain yet!! Thank you Smile

Hi

Around 15~20k is pretty normal for me for chain life. Would last longer if I was better at keeping them lubed (a Scott Oiler or the like will likely dramatically increase their life).

Quite rare that the chain "wears" out with me. More often they develop a tight spot long before they have stretched too far.

All the best

Keith

Change it when it needs it. You worry too much. Lube it, adjust it and ride it.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
