Blew up a CG

Now I know the reliability of Hondas and especially the legendary CG, but a mate of mine just told me he blew up his bike (2001 CG125 with around 5k miles on the clock) I don't have a clue how he's done it with the reputation that bike has and he's a sensible rider

Maybe, I don't think he serviced and checked it regularly because I looked at his chain one day and it was really dry, I asked him how often he cleans and lubes it and he said he hasn't and he's had it around 6 months maybe more

I did something similar to my CG engine. It had a lack of oil. It had an oil leak and I knew about the problem and tried fixing it by replacing the clutch case gasket twice. It turned out I must've had the wrong clutch case due to "Ride On Motorcycles - Glasgow" being cocks.

I kept topping it up and i'd always have a puddle on the garage floor in the morning. I guess it was in vain as I'd always end up running it below the minimum amount of oil.

It eventually blew and I am now halfway through cleaning up the chassis and preparing it for a replacement engine.

I am adamant that it isn't dead yet.

I "killed" my CG engine, or at least treated it in a way which would have killed most other engines out there. But CG's even seem to run after having run out of oil

Now it's absolutely fine but I can well imagine being able to kill one properly if you ran it without oil for long enough.

Mines getting a bit rough now drinks a oil, need to top it up once in a while, smokes a bit but still hits 65 ... also seems a bit thirsty on fuel..

I remember checking the oil in my CG religiously for the first few months of owning it, it never moved and I got bored of checking it as I was young and stupid... Then took it on a longish trip on a dual carriageway (only usually ran it round town to work and back) and it was hellishly noisy and slow, pulled in at the next services to check the oil, and it wasn't registering on the dipstick...

Filled it up with oil, pretty much silenced it (well for a rattly old CG!), and it ran so much smoother and faster! Surprise, surprise! It must have been pretty much empty... ran for another 10k without a problem!

I did the same to my 1.6 vauxhall astra - it sprang a leak and lost 1.5litres of oil over about 1500miles, well below the dipstick, still runs fine 6k on... (fingers crossed)

On a similar note of youthful stupidity I once started my CB500 up with no oil in it midway through a service.... hahaha... idiot! only ran it for about 10 seconds... but again no lasting damage, and put another 16k on that without a problem.

I do like to learn from my own mistakes! I should be in mensa by now from the amount of them I make!

The only guy I personally know to have killed a CG did so by thrashing it without oil, I sold him one of my spare engines.

Is this the time to mention I am selling another spare engine this weekend?

My friend had a rented CG for a couple of days form a bike shop and somehow cracked a piston.

Even the mechanics were totally baffled

Hmm, probably wouldn't get away with just a new piston. If the fuel manged to ignite it would be basically exploding inside of the crank case where all of the oil is? If not petrol will have gotten in to the oil and potentially screwed things up anyway.

I've had my CG at 9K RPM for hours many times and this has never happened.

Hes ordered a new piston in, I did ask him if it had damaged the barrel or anything he said it was fine, but when he took the oil out he said it was like water so guess that means it has mixed with the petrol.

I only seized mine, rather than actually blow it up.

That has nothing to do with oil though, that's redlining it too much.

We think it was getting too much air as he has a K&N air filter on it so was causing a hotspot on the top of piston and ruined it.
He replaced the piston and he says its working again
