What fully waterproof over-jacket? -Got one

I was out in the rain today in my textile jacket and suffered wet arms again after only 5 minutes on the M62 and then more wetness as the day progressed.

-I had previously washed and re-proofed with Nikwax TX-10, plus rubbing/melting solid Nikwax into the crooks of the elbows.

I've decided that wearing a waterproof over-jacket over whatever textile or leather jacket probably makes more sense in most cases.

What waterproof over-jacket?
-It doesn't need to be breathable and shouldn't have a hood, just be a barrier to water and suitable for wearing on a motorbike.

Don't confuse it with a body bag.

You can get a really fetching clear plastic one in MX shops (£20ish) or I've got a black Alpinestar one that doesn't look quite as plastic-like and packs slighty smaller but it's more ££.

If you want any cheap waterproof jacket, get a pac-a-mac style and cut the hood off - Oswald Bailey are normally the cheapest. They have the trousers too!!

I wear a thin neoprene "parlour top" which is designed for dairy farmers to milk in underneath my jacket rather than over it. It's very effective.

I had a rainproof oversuit from Hein Gericke some years ago.
Never had any problems with it, although I didn't get to wear it very often - my step-son "borrowed" it for an outdoor activities course and it was never seen again

I've since replaced my textile jacket so no longer needed it, but if I was in the market, I wouldn't hesitate to get another one.

I got this one in medium. Kept me bone dry through an hour in the rain earlier. Well worth the £30! Doesn't look so cheap and taccy anorak'y as some of the cheap ones.

You can get long royal navy goretex jackets off ebay, to go over your leather one. Will do the job for 20 odd quid

I've always used these for the past 5 years.

I just buy a size too big, so it goes over my leathers, same for the trousers.

Saying that I wouldn't recommend buying on the internet, I went to a camping store in my gear and tried it on there. To make sure I got the right size.


Totally waterproof. I tried various textiles and motorcycle specific waterproofs before going these. They are breathable, you don't sweat, I've used them for 200 miles in torrential conditions.

I also use them for dog walking in the rain.

I've just received the Police jacket (genuine Gore-Tex) and I'm impressed.

As you might expect from emergency services kit, the quality is very good. The jacket looks like new and it fits well over my leather.

I'm a shade under 6' and wear a 40" leather jacket. I bought a large long to completely cover my leather or textile which seems to have been a good choice.

I wore my Police surplus jacket this morning.

I wore it over my leather jacket and wore my surplus army (spot a theme there?) goretex overtrousers over my leather trousers.

The jacket is a good fit, it kept out the wind and the rain, the pockets stayed dry and I didn't get sweaty.

I'm very impressed.
