Guyz and Girls,

I have just patented a new idea and want to do a bit of research with you peeps to see if you think it would be sellable.

I have invented the first windscreen wiper for helmet visors!

Needs refinement - no prototype as yet but the patent is there so no-one can nick the idea!!!

Would you people buy one if it looked the biz?

lol.... I was actually considering something like this when I had to ride my cg125 about 35-40miles a day in winter, to and from college a few years ago.

First I'd just like to say 'Good luck to ya', but, somethings you might want to consider....

'Automatic'/'Manual': If you have a moterised system it's gonna incur significant weight/space problems. And a manual (hand operated) system probably isn't gonna be much more effeective than the special strips on some gloves which are there to clean visors

Moving parts next to the eyes: it may well get quite annoying having something flicking backwards and forwards an inch away from your eyes.

Weight: Most people want to keep the weight of their helmet down

Wind Resistance/Noise: I actually get tinnitus from long journeys sat@95mph... and I occasionally might ride faster (all on private land officer, honest Smile ) having more stuff sticking out of your helmet probably isn't gonna help.

Flies: We all end up with a fly-incrusted visor after a decent ride, but you don't want them to get further smeared over it if it starts to chuck down.

btw. do you reckon you could give me a quick run down of the process for patenting things?... There's a few ideas I've had that I keep meaning to do something about, but never get around to Confused

Give this a read G:
https://www.patent.gov.uk/patent/howtoapply/index.htm

I'm quite keen on building a fighter pilot style heads up display to project your speed, revs, gear and other such details onto the inside of your visor... Would be a pretty cool toy, god knows how you'd make it though.

Heads up visor is dead easy with the right finance - space would be your main problem - as in not enough!!

You'd have to put the 'projector' either at the very top of the inside of the visor (very thin and long) or have it on the top of something like a foggy.

As far as the concerns mentioned, I thought of all those myself and

a: It would definately be automatic
b: I have the design down to the size of a PP3 battery and a small motor
c: it will weight a few grams only
d: flies - there is also an irrigation unit available which will enable a cleaning solution to be added and sprayed onto the visor.
e: Noise - bugger - I can't find a way to stop the noise all the time - when it's stationary (sp) it's fine as a cover could make if aerodynamic enough but when moving, errr....

As far as patents, it's as easy as writing EVERYTHING down, drawing a few good pics and filling out a form. You have to do a search first to ensure no one else is doing the same thing (£130 I paid) and then bobs your uncle - fill out the form and send all the paperwork in to the patent office. I STRONGLY advise you speak to a patent lawyer though as there were initial problems with my form and I had to re-do it. They are expensive but you know you have a solid Patent - I ended up paying £5K!!!

You mean like that camera thing on True Lies??? What was awesome... miniature camera in a cigarette box, and the image is relayed to the sunglasses via some sort of infa red crap.... truly awesome, I want some

talking about a heads up display.. one of the HUDs on one model of military helicopters just shoots it straight into the back of your eye, so you see a nice green semi transparent overlay without actually looking at or through a screen.

don't know if I want anything being projected onto my retina but as far as the wiper in the eye theory - good point BUT it should only happen if it is moving when you crash (if it's at the side it'll bounce to the back of your helmet)

Saying that - you're more likely to bin it when it's raining so you may have found a major flaw!!!!

You could invent a meterial that "repells water" so it runs off no matter how small, The water would just run off. Although if you are doing over 20mph the water runs off anyways   I think its not a bad idea but its also not a good one. I think if it was people would already of marketed it. Its not a new idea. I think i saw that type of thing on tomorrows world aswell, or were they sunglasses?

The HUD idea would be pretty easy. A fibre-optic cable could project the data from a belt/pocket computer. If you could push enough light thru the cable and maybe have some sort of semi-transparent patch on the visor it should work a treat. Alternatively you could use the stick-on screen developed ages ago, though this would reduce visibility.
I have seen a product that is tranparent and sticks onto your windscreen(in a car) but could maybe be adapted for visors. Can't seem to find it now:(
