Didn't you know it's always foggy when out on the road whether sunny or otherwise? Being blinded by nobbers with their fog lights on is something you just have to get used to sadly. If they are oncoming you could try giving them a couple of quick flashes of full beam if safe to do so but chances are it wont make any difference.

Because the world is full of bellends. Thats why.
Its because it looks cool init.

I have many gripes with other retarded road users and their retarded actions, but my biggest one by far at the minute is giving way.
Seriously, I may be becoming dillusional but im pretty sure in the highway code you should give way to oncoming traffic if their lane is clear and your lane is blocked/partially blocked.

Seems not so these days. I dont know if this is just a northern thing or if its happening nationwide but it gets right on my tits.
It happens even more so when on the bike as people just expect you to sway over into the gutter as they come tear-arsing past. But it also happens EVERY single time I go out in the car or van.
People just refuse to stop and give way eg if theres a parked car on their side of the road, they just swing out into the oncoming lane leaving a fag papers width between our mirrors then look at me like im in the wrong because I havent stopped to let them past Rolling Eyes

It (fogs and sides) seems to be a common trait amongst a) BMW drivers, and b) Barryboys.

I think it stems from the 'old days' when foglights were mostly the preserve of higher spec and/or 'sporty' models of car.
I still recall thinking that i'd 'arrived' when i got my first car with a set of foglights fitted (a MK2 'Rocco), i drove around with the fogs on for a while until i realised that a) they offer fuck all in the way of increased night driving visibility (unless it is actually very foggy, when they do a good job of illuminating the kerb, almost as if that's what they were designed for) and b) you look a knob and irritate other motorists.

Now as we all know everyone else on the road is an idiot and only we know how to go about it right. That's what everyone thinks.
That said, yes you'll come across a lot of people who really aren't fir to be in charge of a shopping trolley let alone a powered vehicle be it 2 or 4 wheeled.
One thing and one thing alone works for me, assume they're all out to get you until you find out otherwise, if someone is courteous and sensible to you then be the same to them, if not keep out of their way if at all possible.
The few times I forget that are when I have close calls our on one occasion a coming together which thankfully did neither me nor my bike any great harm. In fact I made a small profit on it because I claimed for things I could straighten so did not need to buy them, one small bonus working in the trade I guess.

This is one of my biggest bugbears, I hate fog lights when it's not foggy.

"Wow, I see you have an extra pair of lights in your bumper. I'm really impressed. If only I had some of those, my car would be as cool as yours. Oh wait, I do, I just don't need to turn them on every time I get in the damn car."

Peugeot drivers are the worst for this, they seem to be fitted to most 206s, and many of the people who drive them feel the need to drive with them on all the time.

Remember, when it's not foggy, they become "twat lights".

Drivers who are twats kindly put them on to warn all other road users what twats they are.

The biggest twats have to use the front and rear ones.

Kepping this in mind can really lower your blood pressure.

ETA: oh, and as yesterday's twat turned out to be a big newish Merc who was doing maybe 45mph tops in an NSL (I discovered he was a known twat when I checked my mirrors after Wink ), reminds me of a pic I did for another forum:

For a start they cant have been fog lights as they emit a very flat low beam patten of light and in no way would cause you any problem when in front of them, or actually driving towards them.
Sounds more like the stupid lights that are becoming more popular that are very small and have a very concentrated beam pattern, best known as spot lights.
Driving on fog lights in actually illegal in anything other than fog....

Had the same thing in the car yesterday. A1 bright sunshine and the prat in the 4x4 behind had headlights on main beam....
Even with the rearview on anti dazzle setting it was blinding.
Guess he did not like having to let me into the que of traffic, but he never turned them off at all.

Sadly we will have to get used to cars with lights on from 2011 as it will be compulsary.... Can't see how it will help road safety, buyt hey some muppet in the EU does.. Even though stats seem to show that it makes no diffrence.

i hate the idiots that dont check their mirrors at all before pulling over or into there drives, dont bother indicating and just hog the road. one did it on my way to work this morning i gave a blip of the throttle when i finally passed him. he did say sorry mind but still. it seems to happen alot also. and yes ive had the old 'well your a bike u can wait or sit in the gutter whilst im flying through' malarky.

the fog lamp thing... jesus its sad. '' oooohhh mate my car looks well sick innit'' thats what tahts all about. tends to be audi a3's and corsa bad bois that love this cunts trick

If he was behind me and blinding me in the mirrors I would have let him overtake.
Not the hero approach but I am a little pragmatic at times.

My 2p's worth:

1 - please don't mistake driving lights for fog lights as these will be on all new cars from 2011 (European law - I know, I know..) and some manufacturers are fitting them already (ie the led strips on Audi's etc). On some cars these cannot be switched off, ala Volvo's in the 70's / 80's. My car has them (NOT an Audi) and I do get other drivers flashing me with their fog lights and mouthing "fog lights". I'm thinking of having a sign made, no, not "I'm a w*nker" rather, "They're driving lights and always on - sorry.".

2 - I HATE drivers who think because their indicator is on it gives them right of way to move into your lane. That REALLY annnoys me.

Thanks for reading Thumbs Up

Fog lights cause me problems, especially in rain (when they reflect strongly from the road) and at night. I do seem to be quite sensitive to glare in general, but not excessively so. If you're lucky enough not to have this trouble, please don't assume it's the same for everyone. Yes, I do know which sort of light is which.

Driving lights are long-distance spot lights, usually wired to come on with the main beams.

I think you mean Daytime Running Lights.

And on a side note, how come the only time I see Volvos with all their lights actually turned off is in fog??!

The lights make him easier to see, surely that's a good thing for everyone? Are you really blinded by them and not just getting wound up over nothing?

I wear glasses and spent a large part of my journey going up a road that had lots of small hills and dips on. Fog lights would dazzle a lot of cyclists up that road if you were at a bad angle. Wearing glasses means you get that extra bit of dazzle of them. Unfortunately it was a thin fast moving road, very unforgiving for people in cars sitting at your elbow busting to get past and car doors swinging open in front of you. Its really not a road you want to be dazzled on for a secound.

I am aware this is a lynch worthy comment in some eyes, but to me, fog lights when not needed are as bad as speeding. Limits are there for a reason and are not meant to be a minimum.

On what Willis was saying about driving lights, I have seen a couple of cars with them on. Not as dazzling by far as fog lights, but yeah, I imagine you get lumped in with the fog light stereotype a lot as nobody seems to know about them yet (to be honest I didn't until a couple of weeks ago).

What gets me even more mad is tractor - oh, I mean Harley 'drivers' with those two fogs or spots either side of the headlight, blazing away, scalding the retina of any unlucky chimp coming the other way. Fuck the nod, they get the finger. Middle Finger

No, because...

Are you really blinded by them

It's often very unpleasant, I have to look away. Especially in the rain. It's similar to main beams, but not quite as bad. And that's just the ones that are securely mounted and pointing in the correct direction. Don't mention the broken ones bouncing up and down.

and not just getting wound up over nothing?

No. If I did that much, I'd have to spend a lot more time moaning on the internet Wink

Just consider that it is ILLEGAL to use them when visibility is greater than 100 yards. That wouldn't be the case if they weren't a problem. Be glad they're OK for you.

Personnally, I just take them as a warning that either the person in that car doesn't know how to drive legally, doesn't know how their car works (what that pretty light on the dash means) or does know those 2 things but just doesn't care about anyone else using the road. In any of those cases, we're dealing with a dangerous twat who needs special attention paid to.

On this topic I'd like to say a big gay thanks to the two really cool guys on sports bikes rolling round hoxton square Friday night at 5 mph with their HIDs on full beam, couldn't even tell what bikes they were on as I could no longer see. Wasted 10 mins of lady watching with unecessary blindness!
