On TV at the mo is "I'm in a Rock 'n' Roll Band" where the country gets to pick their all time favourite Rock band. The three finalists are Led Zepplin, Queen and The Beatles. Now regardless of what the country thinks, who from those three would get your vote? Personally I'm going for Queen - I've spent more time listening to their stuff than the other two combined.

They're also choosing their favourite guitarist/drummer/front man/bass player. If I were to put together a rock group, I'd go for...

Drums - Carl Palmer, of Emerson Lake and Palmer fame.
Bass - Herbie Flowers, session player supreme.
Guitarist - Although he's a multi instrumentalist, I'm going with Mike Oldfield.
Vocals - Freddie Mercury. I think Justin Hayward has the better voice, but he's no Freddie when it comes to leading a group.

What would your line up be?

To me Rock is ACDC or at a push, the darkness.

Beatles are pop.

Queen is pop rock.

Rock n Roll is Elvis Presley or Chuck berry or something.

I dont know enough Led Zeppelin.

I dont know band members enough to concoct a super-group

They just voted Flea as greatest bass player of all time.... I expect to stop laughing around Thursday. Laughing

Arrow Drums - Tim 'Herb' Alexander.
Arrow Bass - Norman Watt-Roy.
Arrow Guitar - Ed Wynne.
Arrow Vocals - Eric Wagner.

Should keep it interesting. Cool

Out of those 3 it would have to be Led Zeppelin, a lot of their music still sounds modern, the other two (to me) do not. However, the question it's self is very subjective.

As far as a super groups goes there have been quite a few that have released records.

Them Crooked Vultures? Velvet Revolver? Audioslave?

as for coming up with my own i would doubt the individual musicians would gel as a band.

I would go with:

Vocals: Cory Taylor
Lead Guitar: Joe Satriani
Rythem Guitar: Izzy Stradlin
Bass: Gene Simmons
Drums: John Bonham

I think that that mix could perform in many different styles.

The Beatles. The others are one trick ponies to a degree.

My line-up (when the artists were at their peak Wink )

Lets start with the foundations...Bonham on skins

Jack Bruce on Bass Guitar.....Oh yeah this a noisy but tight backline.

José Areas..Percussion....Wasted in this band as he will be playing cowbell. Very Happy

Jordan Rudess..Keys...under strict instructions not to show off. [edit] will be behind a screen...annoying wanker.

Rhythm Guitar and Backing...George Harrison. (no bloody sitar or yer on the bus home)

Zoot Horn Rollo for Lead. Cool

Neil Young on vox and i might let him do a guitar solo.

Me...playing either synths..2nd drummer..Bass or guitar...Well i am the Manager of this band (60% cut)

I have been to many great venues over the years, so i have chosen the Navigation Inn Nr Whaley Bridge. Fine Ales when i last visited and the acoustics are 'pub-like.

Live sound will be handled by Lee 'Scratch' Perry (Be prepared for instruments leaping out of the mix, at intervals that only Mr Perry understands)
Lee 'Scratch' Perry best not be too stoned as he will be mixing in Surround Sound.

Lights and decor by Marc Brickman (Pink Floyd etc)

Smoking Ban will be lifted.(Only way i can get Perry to play)

Tickets available through me
£10 is a good price to see a band.

(£25 i'm paying to see Peter Green...Hmph)

Spent more time listening to the Beatles than the other two, a lot more time. Still do.

Regardless of mood, the Beatles will always fit, Queen will not, and Zeppelin are very mood and circumstance specific.

Any 'supergroup' I could come up with would probably be laughed at, i'm not much of a musician and I don't pay a great deal of attention to individuals. I've got certain favourites, but not confident enough to put them forward. No real idea what makes a great guitar player over anyone else.

Rock 'n' Roll is Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Chuck Berry.

This is a great Chuck Berry clip if you haven't seen it, one of my favourite clips actually. Fantastic tension.

It's my understanding that Scratch gave up the weed (and drink) a while ago, i recall him stating that he wanted to see whether it was the ganja making the music, or whether it was actually Scratch himself.
He's probably not the best choice TBH, as he'll probably either burn the place down like he did with Black Ark, or piss on the mixer in order to get the 'right sound' - he (supposedly) did this whilst working with Adrian Sherwood.

My line up would probably pretty much be the Jimi Hendrix experience, except with Jack Bruce on the bass - mostly because Noel Redding was a bit shit really. Mitch is probably my fave drummer of all time, i love his brand of staccato machine gun like drumming.
Probably have to get a decent singer in there, whilst Jimi is the God when it comes to widdling the guitar, he couldn't carry a tune if it had handles.
I'd probably draft in Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart) or Steve Marriott (Small Faces) to do the vocals, because i love that sort of gravelly shouty vocals.
Lyrics would be written by Lennon/McCartney and Bob Dylan.
Production would be handled by Martin Hannett (of Joy Division/Factory fame), although he'd be under strict instructions not to put a flanger on anything, especially the vocals.

The Beatles? The most overrated band in history. Simple twee lyrics or psychedelic stuff no one understands. Maybe they were good in 1968 but Led Zep were superior.

Queen was very much a split personality band. May thought it was a Metal band, Freddie Mercury thought it was a glam band and the other two didn't have a clue. Yes a good band but the best? No way. I can think of three or four British bands right now without thinking about it who are better and didn't even get that famous.

It has to be Led Zep, but I think the Machine Head line up of Deep Purple was clearly better.

Interesting but wrong. Gene Simmons isn't a very good musician. He's more of a showman. If you want a good bass player then you're looking at Mark King from Level 42. Izzy Stradlin? Jeez, he's good but clearly not the best.

For a supergroup from me you'd need:

Drums: Clive Burr
Bass: Mark King
Guitar 1: Richie Blackmore
Guitar 2: Eddie Van Halen maybe (There are too many to choose)
Keyboards: Jon Lord
Vocals: Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford

Those guys would kick ass! Cool

all those people were chosen because of the range of styles the band could produce and the showmanship.

I could have chosen a technically better guitarist than satriani.. such as vai or any other of the G3 line up but generally people can still listen to satriani without it just going completly over their heads.

none of those musicians are the best technical musicians but would be entertaining/interesting.
plus nearly all of them can do vocals/put on a show.

Well, he was definitely under the influence of 'something' when he finallyturned up to the Endorse-It festival in Dorset the other year... Laughing Actually the rest of his group failed to show up, so other musicians joined in and did a jamming session, that made it a superb off-the-cuff gig. Thumbs Up
