XR250 to replace my GS500?

I am looking for a new bike after my GS500 packed up after just under 6,000 miles (gutted).

I am toying with the idea of going back to a supermoto, as I loved my KTM 125 and the riding style, although sadly I couldn't get to grips with the 2 stroke engine and the amount of maintenance needed.

I have been looking at a older XR250 with around 9,000 miles, although I fear it might me too much of a power drop, and end up getting bored fairly quickly.

I only really commute, although the option of green laning would be good.

Does anyone have experience of the older XR250's and what I should look out for? Or maybe an alternative bike?

Having gone from a 900 Hornet to a 600 Tenere single, I'd say you'll get bored very fast. What about a twin off road style like an Africa Twin or Super Tenere?

The XR was sold as an enduro bike with harsh service intervals, however the reality is you can get away with a lot more for less harsh riding.
However, you'll be hard pushed to find one with supermoto wheels and they're a bit underpowered for that.

Makes a good greenlaner.

I'd at least consider a XR/DRZ400, DR600 or similar.

I had an xlr 250 which was set up with road gearing. Nice little bike if you are just playing about your local area.

I wouldn't bother with a drz, get a ccm404; cheaper and better carb/suspension. You can certainly go for longer on it than a xr250, but the fun is only found in the real twisty stuff (for me anyway).

It sounds like you want something cheap, as you are looking at old xr250s. So check out the klx650 - they usually crop up with the sumo conversion and are cheap too. Also the older ccm 600s can be had for cheap.

I took the XR250 out for a spin today. I have to be honest as much as I liked the riding style but I couldn't help but feel it was underpowered, and the lack of indicators and road tyres did not help. The bike is a 94 and has done about 6,000 miles. It is going for £850 with a recent service, new drive train and brakes, along with some other goodies.

I did have a go on a SLR650 which felt really good, good riding position and more then enough power for me, although it might be a bit out of my price range. Its a 97 with 19,000 miles for £1200

I am not looking to spend more then £800, so yes, quite a tight budget I know.

Consider a KLR or DR 650; as with the SLR neither will be great for green laning, but but can be got fairly cheaply and have ok road manners.

I mean green laning is not a big necessity for me. Road suitability and a degree of practicality is the main thing for me =]
