Use of the bike

I recently got myself a car to get me to and from work, so no longer use the bike (unless its nice and sunny and i feel like it)

but i dont plan on selling the bike at all, so im wondering will i be doing the bike any harm by leaving it all week, and only having the occasional weekend ride on it to keep everything going.

I was hoping that the car would save the bike from the bad weather/rain/commuting etc. and keep in good condition but now i am also concerned about leaving it and only having infrequent use, it was used everyday before i got the car.

do any of you do the same? cheers nick

Are you on about the RS2 or the 400?

I'd start it every few days just to keep the battery topped up.

Doubt the 400 will suffer too much really, should be a-okay.

it'll be fine, no need to worry.
apparently, starting it up every few days isnt a good thing to do either though, as it can cause water in te engine and cause more problems at some point. this is caused by heating up and cooling down but without getting really hot or running properly.

when i was only using my zzr on weekends, and not even every weekend at some points i bought an optimate battery optimizer. amazing bit of kit. wire up the connectors to your battery, plug in when you get home from your ride and switch on. unplud before you start the bike the following week. they use litttle electricity and are designed to run for weeks at a time. if not months. saves firing the bike up and you'll never need to bump start the bike to get going on a sunny sunday!

If you're going to start it just to charge the battery you may as wel take it for a hurl.
A) You will not recharge the battery with just tick-over engine speeds. Which wil run it down.
B) Running the engine cold will leave water condensate from combustion in the cylinder. this is normally burned off as the engine reaches running temperature in normal riding.
Buy a battery conditioner. about £50 so cheaper than a new battery.

Water condensation in the cylinder? Not going to be a great deal of that in there. Big problem is mildly acidic condensation rotting the exhaust from the inside out.

Starting it and running it on tickover will do no good. Just leave it, and ride it when you want to. Remember to still check tyre pressures from time to time.

If you're leaving it for over a month between rides, worth hooking it up to an optimate or similar.

I roll my bike in the garage and can leave it for weeks at a time without any issues. Only time I do anything is winter, when I put mats under the tyres and bring the battery indoors.

If the battery is getting on a bit, that is the only thing I can see being an issue, otherwise, just park it up and leave it.

Longest ive left mine was 6 weeks, started first time, although I think it's getting towards new battery time for me soon.

Had the 'signs' a couple of times and know it'll bite me in the arse if I dont sort it out...

I'd leave it, agree with the making sure it's clean though, leaving it with crud on for some time will do it a fair bit of damage. If you have a garage an optimate will do the trick though.
