When setting your tyre pressures do you go by the owners manual or the tyres you have fitted?

I have an XT600E which came with on/off road tyres and in the manual is says 21 front 28 rear for road riding. (I use it onroad only)

I replaced the tyres with Avon Distanzias, the guy thast sold them said 32 f 32 rear, I have seen some use as much as 40psi.

Just wondering if I should stick to what the manual says or the tyre manufacturer?

Hi

If the tyre maker (not some random tyre fitter) has a figure then use than, but that is a pretty major difference in pressure. Autodata book gives the same pressures for the XT as you have been using.

Same thing here on my bike.
Bridgestone say 29 psi in the front. Owners book says 24 psi.

29 is very skitty Smile
24's fine.

Yes I actually emailed Haynes when I bought the bike to ask if they had a manual. Got a reply saying "shortlisted for consideration".

I have the owners manual and the workshop manual I downloaded from tinternet and they both say 21/28 but for the original trail tyres.

I just wondered if I needed to use pressures suitable for the current tyres/distanzias rather than the original bike tyres.

Well... Do you want one of us to do that for you too????? Smile

I would go by the OEM manual though. The fitter should have considered this too. Incompetence is rife among the competent is seems.
Sometimes tyres are inflated to way over the running pressure by the fitter to ensure a tight seal at the bead/rim. Though they should be set to the vehicle spec before use.

I have two OEM settings for my tyres. one for two up and luggage/or a really fat bastart and one setting for 'normal' use.
There is about 5PSI between them.
I set the tyres at the middle of this range as I am fuckid if I have ever noticed any significant difference in a pound or two here or there. Honestly. I just changed my tyres from Metzer (OEM Spec.) to Continental for comparison but I keep the same pressure setting as OEM for Metzlers.

Haynes don't do a manual for either of my bikes, good job I have downloaded copies of the factory manual, and have a cupboard full of printer ink at work.
