PC fan kicking in constantly

I've just moved into a new house, and I am using the PC as a media Center again, Plugged into my 40" Samsumg LCD Screen.

In the old place, the room was a bit more spaced out, it was also a house to myself. So not only was the PC a bit further away from me, I could just up the sound on the film/music so I couldnt hear the PC.

I'm living in a bigger house now, But living with a mate, so cant really be pumping out the tunes to drown out the PC fan.



The PC it's self is quite old, but it's not that bad of a spec, so I cant really justify changing it.

It's a Compaq tower unit:

Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80GHz 2.80 GHz
1022 MB RAM
32-bit Operating System


It's got quite a big heat sink on the mother board, with a 6" fan on it.
This is the fan which is constantly cutting in.

Last night, I unbolted the heat sink, and it was like dust fur blanket, all inside the fins, and between the copper plate on the bottom, and the processor (I think thats what that square thing is underneath).

Anyway, I dusted away what I could, and sucked all the dust out of the heat sink with the nozzle on the hoover.
The heat sink was too hot to touch.


I put it back together, and it fired up, Of course, it was still hot, so the fan carried on kicking in.
Not long after, I went to bed anyway, Shut down the PC.

I've just switched on this morning, and within a minute of the PC turning on, The bloody fan kicked in.

I know the fan runs constantly, but it keeps kicking into that turbo mode, And where it's a couple of years old, the fan is noisy, and sounds like a bloody jet taking off in my living room.


Without going to any extremes, what can I do to resolve this?

Get a more efficient heatsink and a quieter fan. The problem you'll have with that is getting something that'll clip to the motherboard mounting, as it could well be obsolete by now. Have you used thermal paste between the heatsink and processor? Without that the heatsink will not be drawing the heat from the processor very well, hence the fan constantly kicking in. Go for the good stuff, like Arctic Silver, not the cheap crap like silicone or a pad.

Where is the best place to get these bits?
I might have a drive to a computer shop with my current heat sink. See what they can match up.

It really is quite a big heat sink already though.


As for the thermal paste, Where can I get this? Just another PC Shop?

You might get lucky and find the paste in a shop but you'll more likely have to order it online. If you do take your heatsink to a shop don't let them talk you into buying some of their generic shite paste.

I'd probably take the motherboard to the place with the CPU still in it, so they can try fitting heatsinks to it rather than just guess at what looks similar. Although if you only have a bike taking the heatsink might be your only option.

Arctic Silver is on ebay, you can get a little syringe of the stuff for a fiver. Local PC shops might sell some sort of thermal past but will probably be the cheap stuff that hetz mentioned.

If you can find the model of the motherboard we may be able to help you in finding a heatsink The motherboard should have it printed somewhere in a font that's fairly big, as to the location though, it could be anywhere.

If you didn;t put therm paste on the heat sink then it might overheat quicker.


If you wan't it really quite get it water-cooled The loudest part of my are the disk drives!

But this is obviously not cheap.

Have you got any idea what motherboard you have?

From the processor I'd guess that something like this would suit your needs, but you would need a motherboard with mounting holes for that type of heat sink.

If it doesn't have any I'd try simply putting a new fan in and see if that works, if not have you got any case fans? If not I'd trying fitting a couple see if that helps the PC cool down a bit.

Motherboard has got "PSLP-LE" and "N13219" written on it.

Just looking at the PC now, The air coming off the heat sink isnt even hot, It's barely even warm.
Yet the fan is still running flat out.

If it looks like there are mounting points around the CPU for a fan such as the one I linked to earlier.

Although if the air isn't very hot I'd be more inclined to believe the fan is knackered, or that the BIOS can't run the fan at a more regulated speed i.e. it can either run the fan at full whack or not at all. If there is an update for the BIOS it could fix that?

I'm surprised by this problem because I have a compaq probably 2 or 3 years older though and it's practically silent.

I've only recently start shutting the computer down.
Up until about 6 months ago, The PC was pretty much switched on permanently. It was probably switched off only a few times in about 2 years.


Anyway, Yeah, It's identical to that Mother board linked above.

I wouldnt know where to stat looking for bios fan updates.

when you remove the heatsink from the processor your supposed to clean off the old heatpaste and apply new.

i'd say thats the problem

Popped out to PC world earlier to see if they had anything. They didnt stock any heat sinks to fit my MB.
So I will buy one online.

Can somebody link me something which is half decent, Not stupidly expensive, and something that will fit my MB?
It's got a 4 screw fitment if that means anything, and it's the same as the MB in the picture above.

I left PC world with a caddy for my other HDD, It's a 160gb samsung jobby, so thought I'd make use of it. Transferred my 22,500 music files onto it, that seems to have taken the pressure off my PC a little bit, the music was taking up 90% of my PC's main hard drive.

why not connect the hard drive into the pc. i am assuming it has SATA ports. would have only cost as much as a SATA cable. with much faster transfer speeds and no unnecessary crappy looking cable.
have you checked the temperature that the pc is running at. i have a server in my room. very rarely goes above 40. it is never turned off
also you sure it is not the power supply fan?

Pretty sure it's the MB fan as I unplugged it yesterday when it was mid cycle on its "Flat out" speed.
Didn't know I could hard wire the new HDD straight into the PC. I know very little about hardware.

and yes yu coudl hardwire a new hardrive rather easily mate. just need a SATA lead and a SATA power cord assuming its a SATA not an ide.

as for the cooler ^^ will be more than perfect for it. but its alot of money to spend on a old pc. considering you could pick up a decent ish dual core for £100 these days
