Gearbox rebuild

Hey everyone, problem on the bike diagnosed as a foobard gearbox.......so does anyone where know the best place to go in the northeast.....to get a gearbox rebuild for a respectable price, i've been quoted roughly £800!! Apparently the parts are silly expensive!!

That being said, if I can't get it done for a decent price, then would my next best bet be to get a second engine and box for about £400 and slot it home?!?!

I just want my bike back on the road!!!!!!!!

I'd almost certainly buy a different engine, or at least bottom end. Either swap the engine yourself, which is pretty simple.

Or you can at least give the gearbox internals to a shop to swap them into your engine. Which will help the cost.

Gearbox work is expensive because it takes a lot of work. I'd learn to get handy with the spanners if I were you.

Yes mate, Nsr125. I'm keeping my eye on this gearbox on ebay, all parts are there. Just need fitting' so I have that option.

I took the engine out myself, so getting another wouldn't be a bother to put back in. I'm handy-ish with spanners, just not a gearbox rebuild!! lol.

The lad who took the engine apart for me to look at the gearbox recommended just getting another engine and box instead of rebuild, purely for cost.

Hmmmm decisions!!

The bike must be getting on a bit, NSRs were stopped in what, 2000ish?

If you're capable of removing/installing an engine, I'd just buy an eBay lump and pop it in.

Easiest, and cheapest.

£800 for a full rebuild on a 2-stroke single is taking the right michael. Last NSR lump I re-built I charged the guy £100.

I was quoted £1200 to fix a fucked top gear on a yamaha SRX. The bike was worth about £500 working so the thing was scrap. I pulled it appart anyway to see how it worked, its was piss easy to get it all appart and understand what was fucked, what parts were needed and how to put it back together again. I got all the gears and gaskets i needed for £120 and had a fixed bike the next day.

Garages just don't want some jobs and quote high just to get rid of you, or maybe make a fortune.

I dunno, I consider myself 'not bad' with mechanics. And I don't really enjoy gearbox rebuilds. Even on a simple two stroke it's:

Engine out
Head and barrel off
Small end out, piston off

One side cover off, clutch off
Kickstart mech off, various bits and pieces depending on engine
Generator/stator stuff off
THEN
Split the cases
THEN get the gearbox out without pouring it out like the end of a bag of crisps.

Then work out which bits are shagged, and reassemble.

It's doable, and it's not particularly difficult, but it's quite time consuming, and I suspect the parts to fix the knackered bits aren't cheap.

This is where being handy with some spanners (or knowing someone who is) can save you a shit load.

Well the top end isn't in the best of conditions but it just needs a service, clutch and everything else is spot on. Just the gearbox its self. If I knew where to source the parts from i'd ring and get a quote, and me and a mate would sort it who's stripped and rebuilt plenty.

I'm swaying towards the ebay job, then just fit it all in!! But then I dunno what i'm buying if it's off there?!?! *bangs head off wall*

David silver should be able to provide the parts. What exactly is wrong with the gear box?

getting the engine out of a 125 isn't a problem as they can easily be picked up. Getting the engine out might well make the rebuild easier too. If i were you i'd just pull it appart and have a go. If you can't do it or it's unrepairable, you just go back to the ebay plan.

Basically, the crank seal perished and sucked the gearbox oil in so I pretty much rode from harrogate to seaham without any oil, so all the gear cogs are shot, pretty much everything needs replacing..........however, i've just nearly got a hold of a full nsr gearbox, in bits but everythings there for £50 including postage, then I can get my mate to put it all together for me

First time I rode the bike mate. Done cbt on 4stroke then jumped on that so wasn't sure. my mate reckons top end just needs a service.

A top end service on a 2 stroke is a rebuild, rings at least but likely to be barrel and piston.

Normally those gearboxes are tough, so the chance of you getting a second hand engine with a knackered gearbox are rare. Just get an engine. The gearbox is the only complex and expensive bit in the whole thing.

If you do go with repairing the one you have, see if the crank needs a rebuild. Might as well do it while you have the cases split.

I've been told that the engines are exactly the same by a user on NSR forum who seems to know NSR's inside out, it's on it's way now, so see what happens when it gets here!!

I bought a nsr couple of months back and after getting it started loads of uglyness raised its head i e crank bearings,seals etc i didnt even bother getting it priced up just bought a second hand lump waiting for it to be delivered and hopefully fingers crossed its ok lol if its not then i spose il attack it with the spanners and have a go at rebuilding one myself cant be that hard surely with a manual and the write tools. The only thing that puts me off to be fair is having to buy clutch spanner thingy and flywheel holder and crank case splitter. So good luck and i look forward to hearing how you get on as i might have to go down the same road im praying the lump i bought is ok the bloke promised it was a good runner but we will see lol

Pete if all else fails maybe we could do a deal on a rebuild lol cheeky i know but worth a shot
