Hi all, my exhaust flames when shifting up through the gears. What causes this? It is an aftermarket performance exhaust.
I know that it would be unburnt fuel igniting.
Is this a bad thing for the engine?

It sure looks cool, but I don't want to bugger up the bike.

are we talking the odd little flash, or FLAMES!?

If its fire, then youll need to check your carburation.

You will need to sort out the mixture setting.

if its a loud pipe, its not unusual to get a few little flashes as when the engine is on the overrun with the throttle closed, unburnt fuel (you will always have a little) collects and combusts in the pipe.

My old CBR600F used to do it when revving high. Looked cool as. Cool It was just a little flash, not a flamethrower type jobby.

No idea if my new bike does it but it's an underseat pipe so I'd be worried about setting my arse on fire. Laughing

Thought flames up top of revs are it running lean?
as when you touch the limiter it stops the fuelling and is still getting cack loads of air?
Coming down through on over run as well, its getting minimal fuel but loads of air?

It is a common problem with those auld Petronas' FP1 Roadsters. Smile

For sure it's a carburettion issue.
The carbs should be tuned to the exhaust by rights.
Most folk don't bother as tuning has no effect whatsoevah on how much noise the endcan permits. (Which seems to be the main reason for fitting after market exhausts.) Razz
