Folks
just to outline the problem - had a short on the electrics which burnt out main coils - these were replaced along with the rectifier and some damaged wiring....all remaining wiring checked OK.
Thought problem solved as bike started but after a couple of minutes the new alternator started to overheat again... despite all efforts to trace a fault none were identified.....tried again and same result.

Has anyone come across this kind of fault...is there something basic that I am missing as all wiring was re-connected as it came off and the loom checked for faults - none found.

The engine is a Malaguti and the bike was for europrean market- what would cause this type of overheat - due to the original short being a 'smoke generator' (lucky had Alan Keys in overall pockets and got seat off double quick as it was red hot!!) and very high current draw could the battery be damaged enough to have gone high resistance and therefore causing uneccessary high alternator output.....any help gratefully received as I am baffled Shocked

My thoughts would be that you have got the problem the wrong way up.

You can short the output of a bike alternator to earth all day long and nothing will happen. They are self limiting, and don't really have enough output to do any particular harm. They certainly don't create excess current.

Things getting very hot very quick is more likely to be your battery discharging into something. Rectifier fault would be the obvious cause, but you've changed that. So good luck!
