Putting 'Motorcyling' on a CV

Been touching up my CV recently since finishing Uni and was thinking whether or not to put Motorcycling in the 'Interests' section as its looking a bit bare.

Currently i've got skiing and snowboarding, football and tennis (can't actually play tennis to save my life but will hopefully never have to prove this) as well as some other work related stuff.

So is it worth putting Motorcycling in this section in the chance a biking recruitment manager will see it and give me big kudos and high fives, or will it make me look like an unnecessary risk taker who is likely to be taken out by a cager on the morning commute

Every sport you have listed and the motorbikes are all seen as potential injuries/time off hobbies by an employee I was informed a while back. Probably better off not mentioning any of them.

It might be worth mentioning you have a "bike licence" or that you have engineering skills? I'm sure that in the same way some companies find you having a car licence useful someone out there is bound to want to take advantage of you as a courier some day

If the person looking at your CV and saying yes/no is a biker, it will help, if they see it as dangerous, they'll put that down as a risk.

Its 50/50 really.

In my 'Hobbies and Interests' section, I have written:

I enjoy swimming, horse riding, taking my dogs for long walks and riding my motorbike.

Because, that's what I like to do (my other hobbies, I don't like to mention mwah..ha..ha..ha..ha )

I got my last job because i put down motorcycle adventuring in thailand. The guy thought it was something a bit different, exciting, adventurous, required self confidence and stuff and remembered me.

Putting down that you can ride a bike / drive a car is a good idea as it means you will be able to get to the job and will have an easier time finding a house etc.

Putting down biking as a hobbie does slightly suggest: May occasionally be off work for extended periods of time with a shattered pelvis.

I have it on mine (along with the fact I have a car licence), but I also have the fact I worked 6 months as a motorcycle technician so I'm not really revealing anything they wouldn't have guessed.

I mention I have full bike and car licences in other skills and achievements. This is generally a good thing for employers.

I put motorcycle restoration in hobbies and interests. It shows I have good hand skills, mechanical knowledge and problem solving skills to mention a few.

I don't have space for interests on my CV. I do have motorbike and car licence written on it though, and will mention the motorbike in conversation at interviews.

My CV is admittedly a little more wordy than most people's, but then that is my style innit...

Anyway, here's how it appeared on my CV for the last job, under one of my 'Hobbies and Interests';

"Motorcycles - perhaps bordering on obsession. Took my test at age 19 and have had a form of 2 wheeled transport since. Current bike is a Royal Enfield and with it being a classic British style bike I can now add ‘Amateur Mechanic’ to my list of skills!"

I've said it before on here, but when it comes to 'hobbies' or 'interests', don't bother, that's the stuff you talk about at the interview, they have no place on a CV.

Aside from that, remember that anything 'personal' has both supporters and 'haters'. Bikes are a good example as people have very polarised views. Some hate them, some love them, so why bother risking a job just because the HR person (who'll be the first person to sift through the pile of CVs) doesn't like bikes?

I'd stick biking down. For most on this forum, biking makes up a large part of our lives. The person interviewing wants to know a bit about you, worst case they'll say "Oooo I could never ride a bike, far too dangerous/scary".

Best case, you swap biking stories, get the job and be bestest buddies for ever and ever.

I'd stick it down. It might be something different than the 'football/tennis/cinema' that every one else has on theirs.

Saying that, I can't remember the last time I updated my CV.

I've just taken it off my CV after having it on for years. A mate of mine runs his own recruitment consultancy, and when I asked him to have a look over it, he pointed out that some people see motorcycling as "a hooligan's hobby" so it would go against me, whereas if the person reading it was into bikes, not having it on my CV won't make a difference.

its not on my cv. the reason is it has jack diddly todo with them how i get about. łast time i went for an interview i rode my ktm sm with full gear on. just changed into the sad rags in the loo. left my gear with the receptionist in my bag.

I put down all the bike clubs and associations I belong to, and all the extra training I do. Then I leave it all out completely or leave it all in, depending upon the job i apply for.

Think ill just leave it out of the interests bit and say i've got a license in the other bit.

Then ill just tease them, so in the interview, ill stretch my arms up lifting my jacket and revealing a (not yet purchased) visor bag and be like;

"Oh that? Just for my motorcycle!"

I try and put forward less-scary parts of it, not sure if it was mentioned on my CV, but in interviews etc I for instance mentioned riding support on a charity trip, I in the past have also mentioned cross country mountain biking and motorcycling - again trying not to sound too 'scary'.
First few weeks at my current job I went in on the KTM with panniers and aerostich despite mentioning I did ride (and it turned out someone on BCF being in one of the interviews!) - all bike stuff stuck in the bike.

When I mentioned I was organising a minimoto and karting event I said 'karting and minimoto at a track in Wiltshire' so as to try and disassociate from chavs riding ride on cheap chinese bikes.

Tell 'em you go rockclimbing....horseriding..maybe even base jumping. Never motorcycle riding.

Funnily enough, I had an interview today where this cropped up.

I hadnt put interested on my CV, but he asked, and I said motorbikes and rock climbing, although I spend far more time on the internet and playing computer games.

The interests thing is just something to chat about after the important stuff, so you can make each other like each other and see you talking about something a bit enthusiastically. (I'm thinking of sales jobs with the last bit).

He asked if I had come off at all, and I was still in interview mode, so said that I've never been hurt, and wouldnt be the type to end up injured and on sick leave for ages.

He said he was only asking because he had had one when 16 and come off it 3 times one being quite serious, and he still remembers the pain (said with a smile).

He said quite a few people at the company have motorbikes.

I think putting down motorbikes is fine and doesnt say anything bad about you, but I wouldnt put interests on a CV personnally.
