Old bandit 600 - what to look for/decent price?

Hi guys,

Going to look at a red bandit later on a N plate.

I dont know a great deal so far as ive learnt about it from a mate.

I know so far;

No Tax
No MOT
Needs tyres
Speedo does not work (cable?)
Needs dust seals
Tear in seat

Mileage is not known to me.

Its up for £500 but if there is nothing else wrong with it i was going to offer £400 and no more. Does this sound about whats worth?

Also, is there anything to check for other than the usual? Arnt downpipes usually weak on these? Its got a Micron can but doubt it has the system...

Unless it was super clean (which from your description it does not sound like it) then i would not even want to be paying £300 for it and even then there are enough good examples/other bikes out there that i doubt it would tempt me.

Seats often split.

The exhaust rots at a join under the engine, the rest of the system being stainless. Bandit Mania will to a jigged repair.

Check for rust on the frame, especially under the engine near the rear shock linkage.

Front calipers are 2 pot sliding items, and should be easy to strip down and rebuild. Rear calipers tend to have the pins that hold the pads in place seize, and these can be pigs to get out.

Seats always tear near the petrol tank,
Rear caliper pins *will* be seized,
Rear shock probably long past it's best,
Check that the carb heaters are still in place,
Oil cooler joint brackets at bottom (which connect to 2 metal pipes) can crack,
Exhaust rots as Keith describes.

Other than that just look for rust and wear and tear. I warped a front disc on one using sintered pads once.

Oh and the top end will no doubt be noisy.

After you've paid £400 for the bike + MOT, tax & various parts it needs, you could of bought one that's up & running with tax/MOT.
