OK G just explained how to do it, but how does it actually work?? I dont see how the engine can jump into life without any help Question

Can it do any damage at all?

Cheers,
Dodd

Well because you're moving when you drop the clutch the engine is forced to spin up, this spins the generator coil and blammo you have a spark. After one or two revolutions the spark is strong enough and it kicks into life.

Kick starts work on the same principle, as do the turny handle things on ancient cars. It doesn't do any damage, unless you drop the bike while running alongside it Wink

Try this: ride along on your bike, pull the clutch in and turn the key off so that the engine stops. Now turn the key back on and let the clutch out... It should fire up again, that's what would happen in a bump start.

OK cheers muchly, will try that tomorrow

If it does any damage Korn, u owe me a Firestorm Wink

Its that when the bike is left on gear, it wont roll... so wouldnt that just lock up the back wheel when doing it quickly?

It won't lock the back wheel if it's rolling along with enough speed... The bigger the engine the harder it is to actually get it to catch instead of locking up, but a 125cc single should be a piece of cake.

Bump starting is a piece a piss, i had to do it the other day at work because the battry is a bit low and it was left in the rain the electric start wasn't turning the bike over.
I just put it in first and do a very slow jog with the bike, drop the clutch in a little, enough for it to catch and hey presto the bike fires up with life.
The back wheel locks if i drop the clutch in to fast.
i haven't tried doing it in 2nd i think that might work better in a car?
i think that 2nd would probably be a bit harder.

And i supose if you have a bigger bike,,good luck running with it. there hard enough to push let alone work up to a jogging speed.

DYLAN ERRR....... Take a look

<------------------------------------- HERE

what does that look like to you????errrr an Rk METHINKS!!!

Most damage I ever did was bump starting the shed...... pouring with rain, damn thing dies on me (turns out it had the wrong dizzy in the end!),

so, I harras some poor unsuspecting bloke to help me, do the whole push start thing (great fun sliding around pub carpark soaked to the skin), damn thing STILL wouldnt go, so we decide to go for another attempt, while turning it round...bang!!! FIres into life!!! ANd off I go straight into a concrete bin Embarassed great whacking dent in side of car Embarassed but its running!! YEY!!! Bloody thing, four wheels pah!! Never again!

Neil, with bumo starting all you are doing is manually recreating what is happening all the time when the bike is running anyway.
