Sitting comfortably ...? Then Ill begin...............
IGNORE EVERYTHING I HAVE WRITTEN THAT IS NOT IN BOLD .
THIS IS WHAT REALLY COUNTS...!
Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Think. I may have found my next bike....

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2001-YAMAHA-R6-BLUE-/230487677801?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item35aa22db69

The best bit... Its an R6.
2k....2001 plate?
Surley that is too cheap?
If you could chuck your general opions of it at me I am all ears.

Is in good ol' plymouth so shall have to try and blag a lift down to have a look at it.

Things to look out for? Common faults etc. Engine noises to watch out for...yadda yadda.

12 months MOT, rear wavy disk, new pads, battery. Not ridden for the last year.

This is more like it in my books.

I am thinking of buying this bike....

tadaaa...

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140416795186&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT !!

Have agreed with seller that he would put tax and MOT on it for moi at cost price as he is so confident that it will go through with no issues.

Would anybody see any issues with the bike as from what I can tell from the ad its been used very minimally if at all over the last 3 years?

Just a good blast do it you think...?
OR when I get it back home ( about a 4 1/2 hour trip ) change the plugs, filters etc?

Riding it hundreds of miles back after being stood for the eternal 3 years I take it shouldn't do any harm?

Muccho thanks Smile

Be very very suspicious. A non standard paintjob and the one-eyed fairing scream write off to me.

HPI check it before you bid.

OK - approx. 1000 miles per year, for 10 years, plus the presence of a race fairing suggests that it's seen a fair few trackdays, and probably been binned at least once; at least, that's what it tells me.
I think there's a scuff on the exhaust, too, which would agree with my synopsis (not definitively confirm it, though).

It may just be that he's been a very minimal rider for the duration, of course, but my suspicion gland is twitching.

Have to agree with the others, it doesn't seem like the seller's telling the truth.

Quote:
It has just been completely Custome Painted in Pearlescent Black Paint with a deep gold metalic fleck which looks outstanding.

It is all in superb condition, fully serviced and ready to ride.

It has been Off the road for the last 3 years whilst the above work has been being done and now before it has even been ridden it is for sale.

Firstly it wouldn't take 3 years to whack on a race fairing and spray it. Secondly, if it had why on God's Earth would he sell it after all that effort.

Of course we could be wrong, but I say you should be prepared to travel a long way to be disappointed. Call the owner and quiz him about the fairings, why it hasn't been used for 3 years and the reason for sale. If you suspect he isn't telling the truth I'd give up on it. Also ask for close up pics of the tyres which could give obvious clues to a track past.

EDIT: Just seen his website at the bottom of the listing. He sells track/performance parts. This bike definitely has a history that someone isn't being honest about IMO.

Of course, he could of just changed them.

Razz

Personally, I wouldn't touch that bike. Seems that at some point that's been tracked/dropped. I know it looks nice, but I'd be very suspicious myself. They come up all the time, I'm sure if you held out you could find a standard example for the same kind of money.

Another possible scenario is that it's been sitting in a salvage yard for the last 3 years at a high price, then been knocked down to clear. He's seen it, knows he has the parts to fix it on the shelf at wholesale cost and is just trying to make a few bucks and shift some stock.

The bit about it being off the road for 3 years because it was having a track fairing fitted is absolute bollocks, so I'd tread very carefully if I were you.

It is clearly an ex track bike, It is missing all the standard road gear and they look a bit like Super Corsa tyres? The tread doesn't go to the edge of the tyre anyway.

Missing mirrors
Missing chain guard/mudguard
Missing standard fairings
Headlight isn't plugged in (look at the picture of the clocks)
Missing front indicators?

Agreed, if it's taken him 3 years to do that, I'd find it highly unlikely he has any skill with a spanner whatsoever, yet he says at the top it's mechanically sound.

"It has been Off the road for the last 3 years whilst the above work has been being done and now before it has even been ridden it is for sale."

It doesn't take 3 years to change the fairings so I think they might be missing out part of the story.

Does it have service history and old MOTs that back up the current mileage? Find out the document reference number on the V5 so that you can look up all old MOTs on this site.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's been used on tracks for the past three years and now they've tidied it all up, stuck a set of new race fairings on and now they're selling it as a bike that hasn't been used for three years and they'll.

It seems that ExtremeBykeSportZ has links with race teams, it's not in any way a bad thing, it just gives you an idea of who you're buying from.
https://www.triumph675.net/forum/showthread.php?t=15148

If you don't mind it an ex track/race bike then fair enough, just look it all over very carefully before handing any money over. Plenty of racers will take good care of their bikes and everything is serviced properly (some things will be done much more frequently than the official service schedule says) whilst plenty of road riders will put off servicing for as long as they can.

It isn't impossible that the bike has just been sat in someones garage for three years, now having a clearout and decided that it would sell better with some new fairings on it.

I've got to agree with Rob. Either through ignorance or just the seller trying to pull a fast, all the bikes I've had off ebay have had some issue that wasn't disclosed. Doesn't matter to me since I pay as little as possible with a pessimistic view of what to expect. I've had some really nice bikes for little money and a few hours graft.

The advert is quite carefully worded.
My zx9 took me about three years to get around to making it road legal again - doesn't mean it actually needed that amount of time.

It's possible that it was just a road bike that they've done up with spare race bits they had lying around.

I find it extremely hard to believe that it's not been decently crashed at some point, so worth asking for history about that at least.

what he said. The bike is of an age that by law it has to have mirrors and indicators I'm not sure if the chain guard is a legal requirement but I wouldn't touch it, just my opinion

Noice :] Thankyou very for all the replies guys.

Just thought I would put it on here and see what your opinions on it were. Had a few doubts myself so wanted to hear from yourselves if my doubts were justified and they clearly were.

Think I am heading in the direction of a '99 plate GSXR 600 srad.
Is a trade in from a guy upgrading to an '04 GSXR750.
Has a years MOT, taxed, 3 months warranty from a dealership in exeter.
£1800 sound about right?

Had looked at getting an r6 which really would be my number one choice however budget wise, impatience and generally just not being sure how much of a turthful R6 I would be getting for 2K are steering me in other directions.

is it worth paying double the price of the bike for a dealers warranty?

you can get a srad for under a grand. that's K3 money.

get the R6.
