Morning all,

Im hoping to but a new bike next week, I will be getting a lift to it and riding it home. It's about 40 miles away and the quickest way back is on the m1.

The bike is a 125 and I'm on a cbt but have my full car licence.

The bike is a pretty heavy 2t so I'm ok riding it in the slow lane but am I allowed? I have googled it to death and getting varied answers.

Cheers

Steve

In a word, No. You will need L plates on the bike so you can't ride it on the motorway.

A resounding no.

CBT = L Plates, no L Plates on the motorway.

However, if you passed your car test prior to February 2001, you can ride a moped <=50cc with no L Plates, but good luck using the motorway! Laughing.

You can't use a bike under 50cc on the motorway. Its not allowed. You can't go on the motorway on a provisional license.

In short, the only way the OP is allowed on a motorway is in a car.

He'll still be riding on a provisional. Its a very grey area as he will still need L plates.

Nope. He has a car licence so will have a full class B1 and will not need L plates - no matter what size the engine.

Might be more hassle than it is worth to trike it though. Smile

Needs to be over a certain weight to qualify as a car.

grey area I think.

full car license = not a learner driver. motorway signs say no learners IIRC.

when I was learning on both HGV & PCV, I went on motorways, L plates attached to bus and lorry.

not sure about cbt tho???

unfamiliar small bike and motorway probably not a good idea though.

It's not a gray area. It's illegal.

No it isn't a grey area. He is a learner in the eyes of the law because he is a learner on a motorcycle. His license is a provisional motorcycle license and he'll be riding a motorcycle. Therefore he isn't allowed on motorways.

There are grey areas in the laws on trikes as we've said, but I am 100% certain that you cannot ride a powered two wheeled vehicle on the motorway without a full license.

You do need a full license.

The only way you don't need a full license to ride without L Plates is if you passed your car test before February 2001, then you can ride a moped without 'L' plates.

However, a moped by definition isn't allowed on the motorway, so you have to have a license.

So it's illegal, find an alternative route! Wink.

It's not a gray area, its a big fat NO because its illegal.
You have a full car license, not a bike licence, hence the L plates, you are learning to ride a bike. Its only 40 miles away which ain't alot, find a B road road and take it for a blast Thumbs Up

It's illegal find a different route.

Motorways are boring as hell anyway, a few nice B roads to try the new bike out on sounds much more interesting.

I was a learner in both the bus and lorry, L plates on and provisional entitlement for both, but still allowed on the motorway??

maybe different for cbt??

Think lorries are a specific exemption from the rule banning learners from using the motorways. Possibly because bus and lorry licences are regarded as an upgrade from a car licence.

As said above by many, as a learner just having a CBT you cannot ride a motorcycle on the motorway.

All the best

in addition to catagory B, Catagory B1 covers ALL trikes below the motorcar weight class. Whether the trike is bike or car based is irrelevant.Prior to 2000 bike licences also got the B1 but if you passed your test after 2000 an A licence only gives a provisional B1 entitilement.

So if he triked his 125 he could take it on the motorway.

Thank you Temeluchus, very susinct and indeed correct.

By the way, they stopped giving class B1 because of a study called "Safer Motorcycling"

Cunts.
