Hello All,
Anyone able to weld titanium? Young son just spent £400 on a secondhand frame (road bike, pedal type) and has snapped the frame, halfway along a tube, so I was wondering if there is an easy answer to this?

Thanks in advance

Not easy to do well unless you talk to someone who knows what they are doing I know with the 2 stroke Ti pipes they usually totally perge them with inert gas and it's not impossible by any means but for something so strength critical as a push bike frame that's failed anyhow best to maybe speak to the manufacturer first?

just my 2 penneth worth

You ought to put a location in your profile so people know whether they are conveniently near to you or not.

Other thing to do it ask your question here or here.

apparently titanium needs careful cleaning and careful purging with argon to weld properly.

Like bladeruner says its probably not something to be done by an amatuer. If the frame is valuable it may be worth getting a pro to have a look at it.

The other thing to think about, is that almost every titanium push bike frames come with life time guarantees as they are damn expensive and are ment to be built for life!

What frame is it, and what did he do to it to snap it?? I'm pretty sure if you contact the manufacture, they'd like to know how you snapped it for their own QC issues.

Titanium is an incredible pain in the arse to weld. It needs to be insanely clean and very well sheilded from both sides, ideally in a completely inert environment.

Welding it doesn't sound worth it. It will probably need to be placed into a jig and welded that way because of heat distortion and purging an enclosed frame probably isn't possible.

Contact the manufacturer.
