At first i thought it was a bad idea as remakes/sequels of classics are usually crap in this day & age but as soon as i heard what it was going to be about, i'm looking forward to it.

Remember that big weird alien thingy sitting in the chair in the original Alien? Didn't really explain anything about it but the movie is going to revolve around that, the 'Space Jockey'. Smile

I think if they can resist filling it with CGI & pointless explosions with flat characters just to attract a crowd, it'll be good. I'd rather see a slow paced film like the original then all out action like Resurrection.

This was the Space Jockey from the 1979 Alien. It's quite interesting, i read the Jockey was actually a pilot who picked up a cargo of alien eggs who infected him

I read about it a few weeks ago. Definitely interesting and (hopefully) as it's Ridley Scott, it'll be done well.

On slight tangent, I'm a touch worried that the new Predator film will be crap. It looks rammed full of cliched characters (in the trailer).

It probably will be. The only good Predator film is the first one. I think Arnie made the first one. "Get to the choppaaa!!" Laughing

Was always weary about any kind of remake of a cult classic, Predator has always had the cliched characters but back in then it worked perfectly, today i can't see it. I think it'll be a fun film but one you soon forget straight after, like AVP but without the fun. Laughing

As for cult classic remakes. Mad Max 4 & The Warriors are meant to be going ahead, currently on IMDB but nothing concrete. It's pretty bad really, in the past several years how many remakes have we seen & how many have been good?

Some films should be left alone. But i really wouldn't be surprised if The Godfather got remade. Shocked

Loved the original Alien films (I even quite liked 3), both the original Predator films were cool too. Totally lost interest in the whole series after Resurrection and AVP1. Never saw AVP2. Not remotely excited about Predator 3.

This Ridley Scott coming back thing... This could deffo be a good thing!

"C'mon do it! Whaddya waiting for! Kill me! C'mon" Mr. Green Embarassed

I really like Predator 2 as well, thought Danny Glover did a real good job, especially like the end were you got a little insight to the history of the aliens when he gave Glover the Pirate gun. Smile

Agreed, Resurrection wasn't that bad but you could tell they went off track just to make another movie.

Some pointless Predator trivia for you. The black guy at the end who is flying the helicopter is the same bloke who's inside the Predator suit. He died from aids a year after Predator 2 was released. He got aids through a dodgy blood transfusion.

Tom Hardy who played Bronson is playing Max ( saw the interview on J Ross last night ) which is enough to make me go and see it as I rate him as an actor... Thumbs Up

I think there's a sort of problem with action films nowadays in the respect that we don't have as many good action hero's out there in cinema land any more. Back then we had stacks of tough guys. Arnie, Glover, Kurt Russel, Stallone, Gibson, et al. They could all play cliches and be good at it. Nowadays we have.... Who?... Vin Diesel... He is a good action hero, Riddick films were cool. Liked him in Fast and Furious too. Everyone else who is meant to be a action hero now feels to... poster boyish... So they cant play them roles like Arnie and that used to be be able to play.

On top of that, directors seem to actively hunt cliche's too. Avatar for all its used storyline and that was one of the first original and good action films I had seen in a long time. Lets be honest it was a flippin Fern Gully remake.

Unless we get some more Vin's into acting, the days of good Predator like films are done.

I like Tom Hardy but let's be honest, a Mad Max film without Mel isn't a Mad Max film. I'd much rather see Mel at hes age now playing an older Max then someone trying to fill hes shoes.

With that said, should they even bother? The first two are magnificent. Are they just remaking it 'just because' or because they actually want to.

I think those type of films will always be in the 80/90s any later then that it just doesn't work. Just look at Die Hard 4, wasn't that a 12a rated film? Laughing So much so that he couldn't even say hes favorite quote because of the swearing. It's a joke.

He says the 'Yippee Ki Yay' line in Die Hard 4. Just as he shoots himself in the shoulder.

The Aliens saga has always been a firm favourite of mine also - Even Ressurection. The problem with Ressurection is that the story and plot are a load of pish. However, the cinematography is excellent and it is worth watching just for that.

If you are going to go into the cinema with high expectations, then chances are it won't reach these expectation. But, if we were to compare, Laughing then I think that Predators looks alot better than the AvP pish they churned out a couple of years ago.

I think they can work today. Fast and Furious films are enjoyable cinematic romps. Again the Riddick films, Pitch Black and Chronicles. But its about having the right guys in there. As for Die Hard 4... That was like watching an action hero with his knackers cut off. Hard to watch IMHO Sad

Afterthought, not quite the same thing but Christian Bale has done well as Batman and I put them under action films. Though admittedly not quite as testosterone based as previous examples.

I agree that right now I can’t really see the ‘action hero’s in the industry. I think Sam Worthington was great in Avatar and Terminator, I hope he doesn’t sell out too badly he’s a good lad.

Predator was on screen magic because of the charisma all the of characters held, they were all friends and you really felt like you were watching something epic, not just a expensive romp.
It does seem like now with AVP and similar remakes of classics, you have a mental tick list which is being marked up as you watch.
Suspense/music seems to be cut and paste ideas from past flicks.
Guns, lots + explosions
Small amount of tit
Meat head
Science guy
Spiritual ‘person’
Token
Joker/s
Usually the plot twist is something so blatant and predictable you have to be shocked and awed by the SFX and sound.

Kill them all, don’t kill them all, either way we don’t care. No proper build, usually to entertain mum, dad and the of the troop.
I almost, almost switched off AVP the first time I watched it, the action sequences were played out as if a group of year 11 kids had a 6million budget and just ran around with cameras strap to their foreheads. I cringed at most part near the end with that twat of a woman and started to dislike the Predator franchise. Thankfully i own the special edition of Predator and watched that the next day. BILLY!!!
....GED TO DA CHOPAA!!
KNOCK, KNOCK.

Yay. Thumbs Up

I waited years for a Terminator film set in the future and Terminator 3 wasn't it. And then what did we get? Fucking Salvation. The coolest bits of the old movies were the future war, this new shit was nothing like that. FAIL.

I would say 'we need more Mad Max films where he's a cop' but I doubt it would be possible to make one that felt right...

Hi

While I liked both the first 2 Predator films (despite them being very different films), AVP much such an impression that I had totally forgotten about it.

Another Alien film could be good, if they can work out how to do it while avoiding cloning Ripley or any other silly ideas.

All the best

If you read the first draft of the script for Alien 3 it is a lot better than the one they ended up making. (it's all about Hicks, they get back to a space station and there's an outbreak of xenomorphs there...)

It's titled Mad Max 4 so should take place after Mad max 3: Beyond Chunderdome.

That film completely took everything good from the first 2 & shat it all over it. For me, the thing that made Mad Max was the bad guys, they were very intimidating which was shown in the rape scene & burning people alive which gave the viewer a sense of fear. But with Thunderdome, the bad guys were laughable & not the least bit intimidating. And off course it had no Interceptor, which was also a big part of the film for me.

So how do they continue the story? The last we see, Max has been 'let go' by Tina Turner, the kids have flew off in a place & he's left in the desert..

Completely agree about Terminator, didn't even watch 3 all the way through but Salvation wasn't too bad, but again i feel like these type of films were made in a time were the look wasn't as polished as today so added to the atmosphere. Now they seem to spend most of the time finding the perfect lighting, which looks unnatural & fake.

Really did like the Riddick movies, new one is meant to be coming out according to IMDB. Christian Bale is a great actor but doubt he'd play any kind of roile were he doesn't stand a chance of winning an Oscar. Mr. Green He seems like one of /them/ actors.

You actually pretty close from what i've read. The 'directors' were actually special effect guys who were fan boys of both the Alien/Predator films. So yeah, what you said. Laughing

Your list is bang on too. AVP was more like Dawson's Creek as i read somewhere about the film.

I watched 3 not so long ago but one thing that turned the movie for me is Dillon. The films seems to go out of its way to show you how powerful/commanding he is, which i didn't like. The speech near the end to gather the prisoners was also cringe worthy, as he's explaining why they should fight the Aliens the slow powerful music kicks in & then finally they all cheer. Laughing You'd never see something like that in Alien, even Aliens & that was kinda cheesy but it worked.

Quite liked all of them, but 3 was the worst. I did like 4. While the first one was a very good film, the special effects have really dated badly in it.

All the best
