After a spill yesterday, looks like one of my riding buddies will be needing one for the next few months.

Must be suitable for offroad use, must be road legal.

Presuming that sticking to a known brand such as Yamaha or Honda would be advisable, or are there some other renowned brands in the quad world that don't manufacture bikes?

Many thanks in advance.

Some of the new generation of race quads are based around the new 4 stroke mx engines and as such require the same religious maintenance,

The ltz 400 and its kawasaki counter part the kfx are based around the drz 400 engine, although less powerful it would be a better street quad for regular use.

Then again you can't beat the old banshee 350 Twisted Evil

I'd heard the LTZ could be a goer - on road manners aren't massively important, more interested in offroad ability, but still has to be road legal.

Are the aforementioned easy maintenance Suzuki and Kawasaki quads capable?

And does anyone know of any forums, etc where there is a good selection of used one's?

Lastly, what are the Quadzilla ones like? Respected? Or the equivalent of buying a Chinese built offroader?

Polaris and Can-Am are 2 that aren't well known in the bike world. Polaris are very good, I've had a go on a Raptor and it wan't for me. I have heard good things of the TRX 450 R basically is a CRF with another 2 weels. Thumbs Up

I had an apache RLX250, they are one of the better built cheapies but I only had it for a bit of fun on the road, topped out at about 65mph but not much fun over 40ish because they shake like a twat.

Took it on a few dirt/farm tracks and it didn't fall apart

hi,
up until very recently i owned one of those chinese 400cc quads.
much the same as this https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2006-QUADZILLA-STINGER-250E-road-legal-/120583485708?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item1c1355f90c but with the bigger engine.
i paid very little for it & sold it cheap because i hated it!
it wasnt for me,no gear box, thumb operated throttle, i couldnt get used to the riding position & is a helluva lot different to a bike or even a car, so takes a fair bit of getting used to.
however it was road lega & i had it out on the road a few times but caused all sort of tail backs, as the top speed was about 50mph!.
i think thats more down to the "gearing" rather than engine size as it could tackle all sorts of obstacles & would go up some impossibly steep hills etc.
very usefull for the likes of farmers etc (in fact i sold mine to a farmer) as the one i had even had a tow bar!
one thing i would say, is get the biggest engine you can afford, as a mate has one of those 200cc versions & hes lucky if it top out at 45mph! & thats with it srceaming it tits off!
it was fun for about an hour, then when i thought about it, i couldnt really see any practical use for it, so got rid.
i was quite impressed with the build quality, especially as im used to the rather dubious build quality of chinese motorcycles & this one was over 3yrs old & had even passed its 1st mot without any problems.
cheers,
GAZ

Had this a few days ago, couple of chavs screaming up and down the main (residential) road where I work, on offensively loud quads.

When I went home, I got round the corner and the whole road was smokescreened; as I went through the cloud, they're standing at the side of the road scratching their heads. with one of the bikes sounding very sick and smoking like the Flying Scotsman at full throttle.

I didn't laugh at all as I went past............................ Twisted Evil

Having a dual purpose decent secondhand quad from a known brand like a Yamaha/Kawasaki etc would make the most financial sense for your mate, if he intends on re-selling it in a few months.

I think if off road ain't your thing though, that you could feel very short changed by the road performance, handling and practicality of most dual purpose quads. Having said that I have seen 2guys riding around Birmingham on modified quads with decent road tyres, one has a GSXR SRAD engine, and the other one a ZZR1100, with a stupidly loud 4-1 pipe. They definitely didn't look safe though! Shocked
