Trailers and transporting motorbikes

Hi,

Do motorbike trailers have anything special about them to load and store a bike on?

Its just that ive got a trailer that is big enough to fit my Suzuki GSXR 600 SRAD in but its not specifically designed for bikes and i have no idea whether i can use to transport my bike or even how to fix a bike down into it?

Does anyone have any guides or information on doing this?

Yes they do.

However, to load a bike on to a normal trailer a scaffold plank, or even a few mates should be fine.

There's probably some kind of hooks around the edge of your trailer you can attach tie downs too - or you can attach them to the structure at the front worst case and probably find something at the rear appropriate.

You can do it on any trailer to be fair, but bike specific ones are easier.


When I had a trailer I did two tie downs off the bottom yoke going forwards compressing the forks, and one tie down off each side of the sub frame going sideways.

That said a van is just sooo much easier.

Well this is actually my dads trailer, and hes also got a huge van that i could use as well!!

Its just that im hopefully doing a trackday in a weeks time and not really sure whether to ride down or take it on a trailer.

So just 2 straps on each side should be enough? And sorry for sounding like an idiot but where is the bottom yoke?

The yolk is the bit at the front which holds the forks on to the frame - so the top is the bit where your bars are and the bottom a bit lower down.

On a trailer I would probably go for 4 per bike + 1 - an extra one over the seat as a bit of extra 'safety bubble' encase one comes loose.

Given the choice I'd take the van however. I've often just used one strap (or sometimes even just one bungee with dirt bikes) to hold bikes in, in the van - though use more if it's a shiny bike, of course.

Riding may mean less hassle, but if you bin it more hassle. Obviously can't take as many tools etc, though you could no doubt find someone to lend you some.
4 wheels also means you can take a jerry can with fuel, rather than having to queue up for expemsive track fuel at lunch time if it's open.
