New bike test in october...

Had a chat with a bike instructor i know... he was telling me they are brining in another change in the bike test.

it'll still be mod1 and mod2, but there's an extra bit in mod2 where the rider is instructed to follow the road signs to a specific location, without any input from the examiner...
He said it's pointless and will end up having lots of riders getting lost.

Anyone heard of this or is he talking pish?

Looks like it'll be for all types of test, they call it "independent Driving"

Oh sweet Jesus don't.... Was going through Central London yesterday which is probably where I will do my test and to buggery with finding my way anywhere there without a map or instructions....

Its not a long part of the test, and just requires you to follow sign posts. Cant be that hard if you know the area?

From a bike instructor I was speaking to the CBT is due to be imposed on NI in October as well as this road sign malarky... glad Im doing mine over the summer.

TBH there are quite a few numpties who don't know how to read signs. Or look for them and turn at the last second. This should hopefully sort out the shit ones Wink

Yeah but surely knowing how to get somewhere is part of driving?

Personally I think some of the worst examples of driving I've seen are by people who don't have a clue where they are going.
I would say sounds like a good thing, but then again I've got my car and bike licences so I don't need to do it! Very Happy

Most people don't know where they are going when they're going somewhere new.

What separates the good from the bad is whether or not they're looking at the signs properly.

Thats fine but what pisses me off are the people who havent planned how to get to somewhere new, especially when theyre on the motorway and stop and use an emergency phone to ask for directions!

I would say what separates the good and bad is something that applies to nearly everything you do while riding /driving, planning. That includes your journeys as a whole and pretty much everything you do during the journey.

Agreed. Sometimes you think 'what was going through the head of these town/council planners!'
Or what I find worse, no signs at all! First time going to cadwell I was convinced the organisers didnt actually want anyone to find the track. Im used to brands which is signposted from the m25 all the way there.

Can't say I've ever seen or even heard that happening! Shocked Till now obviously... Planning obviously helps and looking up your route.

What I really fucking hate is people who use sat navs likes they're law and order. Even my friend followed the sat nav and what it said. The place we were going to, he'd been about 5 times before and knew how to get there. He listened to the sat nav and we went the wrong way on the motorway. Once we pulled over I gave him a massive bitch slap and told him to wake the fuck up before he kills someone. Rolling Eyes

I fucking hate London for it. I planned a route and it said to follow these signs etc. I had to go through London unfortunately (I was on the bike). Luckily it was late at night so no real traffic. But some signs just didn't make sense. I actually came across one that said the same thing to both directions (left or right, no straight ahead) It wasn't even a junction. It either turned left or right so no waiting. I took a gamble and took right and was luckily right. But ffs! Laughing

The signs thing is my issue. London is atrocious with road signs. I am sure other city's have bad spots too but I have always felt the further into London you go the worse it is signposted.

Glad I've passed my car and bike test Laughing I'd get lost in an instant. I can just about get to the local coast (15 - 20 miles away) following signs but I always end up the wrong lanes and stuff.

Can't see myself having a problem with this but I want to get my test out of the way before I go back to uni in september anyway. If you know the area pretty well you really shouldn't have a problem...

So they are telling you to drive without instructions for 10 minutes, what is the difference for retaining instructions for 10 minutes? What stupidness, you still have to follow the signs correctly. So, learners aren't currently looking at direction signs at the moment and they've suddenly decided to teach them that aspect of navigation? Shouldn't they just of read the Highway Code?

I haven't heard about learners having to follow signs for part of their test but I did hear that the DVLA would be looking at changing the bike tests again and were after some input. Cant remember where though.
