Am somewhat lucky to be - walking still?!

My little story of my two close calls with my bike.....
Not posted a story for a while so here it gose.

So - I had no mot for two months... fixing the bike up (indis/plate/tyre) ect ect - Money was an issue.. But got it all road worthy and passed with just 2 advisories. Big smiles all around...
Anyway... just before the Mot I had my rear tyre changed - used the local place, very well known.. never had an issue.
Few days after Mot - I ride to Southampton - I arrive good and well. Garage is on a slight hill - as I was waiting for the door to open - i noticed I had no rear brake.....None, what so ever
I get off - take a look....1 bolt from the caliper clearly gone. 2nd bolt half way out.. Caliper 'sitting' on top of the brake disk
Dread to think what would of happened if I had to of traveled just that bit more.

That was one close call i was a bit 'meh' about

2nd one was yesterday....
literally come off the motorway - after doing some speed..... go into my partners close at 20 mph and bang...clutch it but the bike snaked - How I kept it up I dont know. got off - Chain is off, jammed in the back wheel.... at this point im bricking myself - less then 2 miles before I was pulling 120 on the motorway

Freed it, pushed it to her garage.... thankfully Sparks come to pick the bike up yesterday - thinking I had seized the engine - touch wood its just new sprockets/chain thats needed.
The sprocket was missing 4 teeth - yet, when I had my rear tyre changed the guy said 'it needs to be changed, but its ok for now'
Lesson learnt - someone/something was looking over me and a huge lesson learnt by myself - always check your own chain
Im here, fit and well - well not so much fit but im moving and leathers all the way now (as I was only in Jeans and trainers )

Moral of the story when you let someone else change tyres, always go round once you get home and check everything.


As to the chain, more likely the fact you were doing xxx mph that got the chain and sprockets so hot that it took the teeth off.

A few peeps have told me to mention to him that the caliper wasnt done up corectly.... but im just not the type of person to tell someone
As for the chain.... who knows... Just seemed a bit odd that since they touched the rear of my bike that two incidents have happened.
I dont want to shout about it - maybe a nice email might do.
Just feel pretty lucky at the moment... It has somewhat put me off biking slighty.. but I shall be back

I had my tyres changed just before i sold my CRM, Rode home from shop fine, jumped on to go to work next day, about 10 miles into the commute go to pull on the front brake and nothing! Look down and theres the caliper+bracket swing freely on the end of the hose! Went down and gave em hell, But the were understanding and have gave me the money to replace the caliper bolts plus 2 free tyres with fitting next time i go down. That was protyre

But Russ changed my front which was - as normal perfect.
New guy doing my rear - never seen him before - hence why im shocked.

Umteen years of good service kinda shattered by this one thing...

Guy at work had his rear changed at Russ' yesterday. I think I'll tell him to give it a quick check over.

I got mine done there in April and it was first class as usual. Well, my rear brake hasn't fallen off anyway.

Ive sent a message to the tyre place - taken a while but people are still going on at me to get it done... so its done.
I am not expecting any outcome - but ive been polite and told him whats happened.

A lot of bikes you don't need to unbolt the rear caliper when removing the wheel, you just remove it while still attached to the carrier, can you do this on your bike?

So maybe the fouur missing teeth were still in place when the tyre was changed I doubt he counted them or checked for hairline cracks. You could easily have had a stone thrown up into your chain but the chances are it was down to not adjusting it yourself.

Big fucking non story that could just as easily be titled 'I can't be bothered to do basic maintenance but I think I can blame someone else' and tarnish their reputation.

I wouldnt ruin anyones Reputation - But the caliper is clearly there fucking fault.
Yes you have to remove it - Again why should I go around the bike to check everything with a good reputation and that ive never had a problem with - would you after a service. . . .
The chain I have no Idea with - its wasnt long ago that it was lazer lined - so it was spot on thanks. Less then a week after the wheel taken off - it comes off!!

the usual tyre place that does my bikes, had a new guy in...who managed to pinch the inner tube the first time, then after putting a new one in he mounted the tyre round the wrong way

Also im sure the shop dislike me, as the wheel wasnt straight after they put it back on..

Well as part of your normal checks before riding you are supposed to have a quick look to see all is safe and secure

It could be very well that they didn't full tighten the bolts on the rear disk, or may have over tightened them and stripped the threads. They would then vibrate loose.

As to the chain, well you admit doing nearly twice the legal limit..... Anything like this is going to cause strain on the drive train and any weakness is going to be highlighted.
Perhaps that problem is more related to the lazerlining......

How long have the chain/sprockets been on ? Unless they are very new, that I would put down to experience. And rather than looking at the tyre place. Think about the MOT satation who should have checked the chain/sprockets at that point.

Same could be said about the rear brake as well. If you are blaming the tyre fitters, then you need to have a long hard think about what they did/looked at when doing the MOT, as again if the bolts were loose they should have picked up on the issue.

In both cases the MOT station are the last people who have had the bike...... Other than you of course.....

There is also a chance that someone else needed a bolt or two and nicked/loosened them
