Just been thinking about something that happened today that honestly made me very uncomfortable.
When I go to work I park my bike opposite our stores front doors about 30feet away, best way to describe it is at about 1 o'clock as you look out. I have done this since my CG was stolen so that I can see it at all times (I work on the till)
Today after I'd parked up and locked up (25mm thick link, hardened steel Squire chain, looped tight through the rear wheel and swing arm and over the rider seat) I was surprised to see 2 guys on bicycles riding around the carpark, their attention focused solely on my bike, which I thought was fine because it's not a hugely common bike and in town when I park up it usually gets a look. They kept circling round looking at it, which started made me want to keep looking to make sure they weren't up to no good., they went away and about 10 minutes later came back. I know not to stereotype people but they looked like the sort of people who might be up to no good, so called my supervisor over and pointed them out, he said to keep an eye on them and gave me the number for the police direct line so if they started to steal it I could call for a car to be sent out (the police station is literally less than a quarter mile away)
One of the guys got off his bike and started properly nosing around the bike, looking all over it, rattling the security chain, he then pulled out his mobile, and made a call. While making the call he was looking at my number plate and then tilted his head to read the chassis number, which I found very very disturbing, because thats not something that anyone needs to do. He finished his call and left again. Around half an hour later a van pulled up in the space opposite the bike and the phone guy got out, along with an older guy, probably late 50's. They walked in, and started looking around, I assume for a motorcyclist. They came to the till and asked did I know who owned the bike, so I told them it was me, and he then said how it was his old bike, and he had come with his dad because they were in trouble for riding without tax about 3 years previously and it had been seized (which ties in with it being stored since 2006)
He asked whether it was road legal, to which I said yes, but the tax and insurance run out at the end of the month (in reality MOT is october, tax end of next april, insured until mid april) thinking that he might be looking to steal it and ride it around without attarcting any attention to himself, they then left so I brought the bike into the delivery area out back just in case they came back to put it in the van. That didn't half make the adrenaline pump though!
Just thought I'd share that, and see if any of you would believe his story or whether he was just scouting to see if it would be worth stealing because all the paperwork was there? ____________________ '84 TS50X, '91 TZR125, '89 CBR400RR, '91 VFR400R NC30, '98 R1

I work near the middle of town, which is a bit rough, so thought it best not to, for fear of getting my head kicked in, they did look like the sort who wouldn't think twice about it, and I'm a 19 year old weed, who wouldn't put up much of a fight, plus if I'd have told them and they DID want to steal it they'd expect me to have the keys with me. ____________________ '84 TS50X, '91 TZR125, '89 CBR400RR, '91 VFR400R NC30, '98 R1

999?
The kids were scouting out possible bikes to steal. Everything the bloke told you about it being his old bike was a load of bollocks. Your big chain is all well and good but unless the bike is chained to something that can't be moved then your bike can be picked up and put in the back of a van. Is there anything at all that you could lock it to?
Report what happened to the police, be good if you got a note of the registration of the van so the police will know what to (supposedly) look out for. Rather than calling the 0845 non-emergency number, look up the normal geographical number on www.crimestoppers.org.uk
Is there any CCTV that covers where your bike was parked and where the van pulled up? |
Lol 999 is all well and good, but it took them 2 hours to send a PCSO to the same location when the CG got nicked =/ The direct number is supposed to be something to do with getting the police down there even faster than normal in the case of shop lifters or something (I'm a mere shop bod and only get a little bit of an idea as to these things! )
They weren't kids, I'd guess between 25 and 30. I have a feeling he may have been telling the truth, because he told me that it had been seized in early 2006, and had been stored, and when he couldn't afford the storage costs it had been sold on. This is in line with what I was told when I bought it, that it had been stored for a couple of years and he had recently bought it to do up and sell (only had it 10 weeks when I bought it)
I use a regular car park space, and there is nothing to chain it to, no lamp posts or anything, the first 3 or 4 days of riding it I had chained it to the bollards in front of the store, but the area manager saw and threatened me with a formal warning because those spaces are for customers. I've asked on many occasions whether they would consider asking the council to fit a ground anchor in the corner of the space and reserve it for bikes, I even offered to buy the anchor myself so I could keep my bike safe!
I'll pop into the police station tomorrow and make them aware of the events, I didn't get a reg number, and it was a white transit van, so could only be most of the UK! ____________________ '84 TS50X, '91 TZR125, '89 CBR400RR, '91 VFR400R NC30, '98 R1

Firstly - int his situation don't tell anyone anything until you have their name and address. If they don't want to provide it tell them nothing. Make a note of their registration too.
Was the guy trying to make out he was still the legal owner of the bike? Sounds like it.
If he is the legal owner, then you have been sold a stolen bike. Theft is defined as the intention to permanently deprive the owner of their property so if someone has sold it to you knowing they aren't the rightful owner then they have stolen it.
First thing you should do is ascertain your legal right to ownership, so that if you have any further dealings with the guy you know exactly where you stand legally. Quite how you'd go about this I don't know but I'd start with a chat at the desk of the local nick. Just go down and explain to them exactly what's happened and what your legal standpoint is. Quite possibly there is some rule that says if a seized bike isn't claimed within a certain time frame then it can be sold to recover storage costs but you need to clarify exactly where you stand so you have an answer for the guy if he shows his face again. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

if anybody take an interest in your bike, make a note of as much detail as you can.
for example : number plates,
make of van or car
colour of van or car
any stickers in the windows
Types of people (white, black, asian, ect)
hairstyles (long, short, bald?)
how many of them
types of clothing they were wearing
rough guess of thier age
VERY important: what time
then point this out to a colleague
if in doubt: phone the plod, it`s thier job to prevent crime and apprehend criminals, make them work for thier living!
if you have to intervene to prevent your bike being stolen, be VERY careful!
one tip i would suggest is to make LOTS of noise and shout a lot to attract attention to what is going on, thieves and scumbags hate that!
hope this helps ____________________ I am the sum total of my own existence, what went before makes me who I am now! |

i would ring the old bill and report this incident. only because if they do clone your bikes plate or chassis, you can say you reported someone asking questions and snooping around the bike, give them descriptions and possible attain a crime number, insurance companies and the plod like crime numbers. id hate for you to find numerous speeding and parking fines coming through your door. lock it to an immovable object through your frame or get the bus. not worth risking is it? and yes a cover wont go amiss, then if anyone tries twitching it and u spot them you can politelyb tell them to fuck off. ____________________
