Ok, so, I have no laptop. I want one. I can get a good one for around 220, but it doesn't come with windows (and they want an extra 85 quid for xp home... like fuck).

I have access to half decent internet and stuff here to download XP pro off of torrents. How the fuck will I get it on a laptop? Do I just put it all on a USB and make that the boot directory? Are the USB ports firmwared on (I remember the horror of killing off disc drives before during formats on towers) or what?

Any help would be good. I've been without music for far too long. *sob* Crying or Very sad

Just put it on a USB, use windows 7 rather than XP, I have a netbook (Dell mini 10) and it runs much better on Windows 7.

Better in what way? XP has a smaller footprint, less memory requirements and better battery life than Windows 7 on a netbook.

Win7 runs faster than XP on my Mini 10, XP was a dog, My battery life doesn't appear to have changed still about 6 hours usage. You also don't get the shit that came along with XP, slowing down and taking years to shut down. Can't give you technical reasons but since having Win7 on my netbook after 6 months of XP the last month of 7 has been much better, faster running, booting and shutting down.

If he's going to go through the hassle of putting it on without a CD, it would be wise to put the better option on, no?

Saying that, if all he wants is music and browsing, why not stick with the OS that comes with it?

this is the guide i used.

once you have a bootable usb you can put anything on it, i've used the same usb for windows 7, xp, ghost, active disk image (obviously not all at once, shame that)

https://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ is good for loading the iso image onto the usb stick and making it bootable. then most of the time its just a case of putting the usb stick in and booting up, you may have to go into the bios and enable booting from usb to get it to work.

So, heres another question for you. If I start downloading games, and the games just come as an ISO....

Any of your gurus know how to get that to work? I want to play spore and an old school game (machines).

As for XP, I admit 7 seems more streamlined, but I hate compatability issues and such guff.

There's a number of proggies out there, but I use MagicDisc :-

https://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-overview.htm

It allows you to mount the ISO image, and it just looks like an extra drive to the OS.

My only tip is, if it has a solid state drive and not a standard hard drive format it to fat32 not ntfs. It will run alot faster for geeky reasons I wont in into. Smile

Ok, be gentle with me here, my only skill with computers is breaking them and acquiring free things.

Downloaded Shaggys program (twice), neither worked. I has two ISO's (which I assume are just images of the disc as a whole for easy copying)... so am I looking for a program that turns it in to a big executable? Or what...

Also, my favourite pc game of all time, Machines by Acclaim, was designed for 98/2000. It's been patched for XP, but will probably be a dog on 7/vista. And I really want to play it. Just found it on btjunkie.

Then there's spore, which I just generally want to play. Teach me the ways of the force, oh geeks of BCF.

An ISO is a copy of a CD or DVD, and "mounting" it is the virtual equivalent of putting it in a drive. Programs like MagicDisc and Daemon tools create a new drive on the PC, which you can then point at the ISO you've got. You then treat it just like you would a CD/DVD and install the game/software from it or watch the movie.

Did the MagicDisc just not install, or did it install and just not mount the ISO?

If you've got a new tray icon after installing it and rebooting, you should also have a new drive in My Computer. Right click the tray icon and select "Virtual CD/DVD-ROM", then the new drive - it will say something like "E: No media". Select "Mount", and it will prompt you to locate the ISO you want to use. Then it will look like you've just put a CD in that drive, and you can install and run whatever game is on the ISO.

you could just get a usb external dvd rom drive either full size or one of those small optical drices that are totaly usb powered,

then you can download whatever os your going to use and burn it to disc from another pc and then choose the dvd drive as your boot device for your laptop job done.

It is how I have to reinstall on my compaq mini (came with os disc and driver disc but no cd/dvd drive Rolling Eyes ) done it about 4 times so far in 12 months using an LG 20x external super multi dvd rewriter, its not the smallest thing in the world but it does for reinstalls etc.

I might get one of the smaller ones to go in my laptop bag in the future but afaik most of them are just readers rather than rewriter.

If your having a nighmare getting an os disc it might be worth contacting the manufacturer of the laptop and asking for a os disc from them, they usualy only cost about £15 for a branded os disc, If the bios has an oem string you may not even need to worry about activating windows as oem disc use slp key to self activate.

As has been said use daemon tools, I found Win & to have no compatabillity issues, it went on My netbook I'm pretty sure I didn;t even need new drivers.

If something runs on XP it should run on Windows 7, if the program crashes when you try to use it a box comes up saying "Did this program install correctly?" if not use compatibility mode which has always worked for me.

Also my netbook is cool,

Ok, just got a notebook for about 280 quid I guess.

Windows 7 already installed Smile

Will take some time to stop the urge to beat it savagely to death. Also my 4gb flash drive has the mother of all viruses on it, and formatting it (repeatedly) has done nothing.

Sad

Anyone got a safe link for deamontools? So paranoid about my laptop now. My own, my precious Razz

Also the genius at the store decided to partition my harddrive in to 3 chunks... anyway to undo that piece of stupidity? I just one one cocking hard drive, fag muncher.

Daemontools is free and downloadable from their website, perfectly safe.

I have my hard drive in partitions, I have the OS on one partition with 5-10gb to spare for installing programs and what not, the other partition is for downloads, the other hard drive is for permanent stuff like movie/music/document archives. That way if I want to format my comp for whatever reason I can be up and running and have all programs re-installed in about an hour and still have everything on there from before ready to roll.

I'm going to assume you have a part for the OS partition, a pagefile then a storage partition. Keeps things more organised and less fragmentation of the OS.

if the hard drive had been partitioned into three then one of them might well have been a restore partition for your windows.

booting from said partition is usually like booting from a restore disc exept the partitions have all the drivers backed up too.
