right, i usually go about 4 times a week for around an hour and anything up to 2 and a half hours depending how i feel, but usually an hour.

I start work at 7 and finish at 4 and have late nights more often than not, and after work im pretty fucked and force myself to go.

Now for a couple of days ive had a pint of energy drink to sort me out for the day, and for some reason i can push myself much harder and further than without.

Are these some sort of steroid equivalent or something? Its weird to feel so weak one day then to be fucking he man the next in terms of energy levels and recovery time between sets.

Depends what's in the drink.

Probably some sort of isotonic carbohydrate based drink. So just give's you a fair bit of long lasting energy.

I used to be in the TA and, on a long hike, you'd be amazed how much energy something simple like a Mars bar provides. It's genuinely noticeable (well, it was to me anyway). The ultimate rush though is Kendal Mint Cake!

Yeah a bit of glucose makes the world of difference, 2.5 hours is far too long for an effective workout though, keep it to 1.5 at the very most, beyond that and you have exhausted your muscle glycogen (runners call it hitting the wall) and are relying on alternative metabolic pathways. These pathways are catabolic so if you are trying to gain muscle they are actually very detrimental.

Eating before hand helps as does drinking during, eating immediately afterwards is essential IMO.

You can make your own isotonic sports drinks for cheap though; sugar free orange squash, glucose powder from boots (about £1.50 for a large box) and a dash of salt.

A pint of energy drink doesn't sound great.. Lucozade etc. is fine, Red Bull is not.

You want five meals A day and cut your workout down to an hour, no more. If you can go on after an hour, you didn't push yourself hard enough in the first hour.

What are you training for? Muscle mass, Cardiovascular fitness or are you cutting?

Contradicting yourself there.

The best training is the training you enjoy. If he has no specific goals other than keeping in shape and enjoy's what he is doing then it's fine.

Excercising, as with almost everything, is dependant on individuals. This is the most important thing to remember.

im just going mainly for the fun of it tbh. Something to do.
Like i said i mostly got an hour but a few times ive stayed for my mates workout who turns up after or something. Even then its like 20 mins treadmill or x trainer for the remaining time.

Usually i do a 15 min warmup run at about 12kph then weights, chinups, abs etc. Not much work on the machines as ive seen people who use nothing but them and they look pretty deformed Very Happy anyway, pretty much that until im fucked on each area. Takes about an hour flat out.

Ive got a bit of a gut, but i eat an absolute fuckload, so if i like food, give a shit.

I was only wondering where the extra endurance came from? And is it doing any negative effects in the long run? Not fussed about heart attacks and stuff, i just dont want to put on a fucktonne of weight as gymming pretty much counteracts the eating habit keeping me at a steady 15 stone ish.

What he said Thumbs Up

Hour max for workouts - can't understand people who seem to think 2.5 hour workouts are the correct thing to do.

I get a similar kick from a banana, (no euphimisms please.) Although I wonder how much is psychosomatic.

Thumbs Up

Assuming the rest of your diet isnt terrible. So eating fruit & veg now and again, getting a variety of foods to get necessary nutrients etc then it should be fine.

I just chew bricks when I'm hungry and drink motor oil to hydrate.

If I am feeling particularly peckish I have an electric guitar or two.
