One thing I love about having a motorbike is the community you then become part of. And what I love even more is when something happens that emphasises it!

I took my wee bike in to the garage this afternoon to hopefully get the suspension sorted out. The garage is in an industrial estate type area and public transport is, well, non-existent basically. I've walked into town from there before, and got a bus home from town, and that took me 45mins/1hr to do.
While handing over my keys I asked the woman at the desk if there were any bus routes which I might not have known about to get me home a wee bit quicker. Next to me was a guy zipping himself into waterproofs having picked up his bike from MOT. He overheard the discussion and offered me a ride home on his bike! Which was a very comfy old BMW tourer (no I don't know what sort specifically lol).

So what would have taken me at least 45mins took 10mins instead, and was much more fun.

I love bike people Very Happy

when my VFR400 packed up (flat battery) on the way to boxhill on its first ride, a guy on some big harley daversion stoped and helped me bump start it and when my regtifier cooked its self a guy on a R1 ask if l need help, also when ever l have had problems with previous bike breaking down most fellow bikers always stop and ask if l need any help also me and my dad always do the same if we see some one, its like a common respect most bikers have.

Plenty of times I have stopped for a fag break when out for a ride only to have people pull over and check if I'm ok, good of them to pull over though.

Although one hot summers day last year I was heading out to a bike meet on my RS 125 when I noticed colin standing at the side of the road with his NSR, it had seized so of course I stopped. Whilst we called people to try and get him and his bike home I would honestly say about 60 bikes at least must've gone past us. Almost every single one slowing down to have a quick look yet only 1 of them actually bothered to turn around and come back to see if we were ok, by this time we had a few bikes on the way to us and my dad in the van so we were fine then, maybe it was because we were on 125's though but we were both wearing full leathers.

lol well I wouldn't describe myself as such, and perhaps that did partly influence his decision, but it was still a really nice thing to do!

Whenever I've pulled over to have a quick ciggy, a passing biker usually stops and asks if I'm OK Smile

When the NSR died on me one time, 5 odd bikes went past. Not one stopped, although a guy in a Saxo was kind enough to help me push my bike to work Smile Turned out he used to ride a TZR125 before he stacked it badly and got a car Sad Same happened when the NSR siezed up and threw me off. Couple of bikes flew past without even looking, and a guy in a white van helped me Smile He wasn't even a biker but he said he always helps one if he sees them in trouble Thumbs Up

I stop too, I don't know much but I try to help. Did help a 16 year old once when his RS50 wouldn't start. So I did the honourable thing and bumpstarted it for him Smile After it was running he said something pretty classic...

"If we had cars and this happened, bet you wouldn't have stopped"

And hes probably right Very Happy

I always stop, or slow down and get waved on.

Even if all I can do is give a cigarette, or lend a mobile phone.

I'd hate to be stranded, so I try to make sure others aren't.

Worth mentioning that the conventional way of indicating to other bikers that you've got trouble if you're stopped is to put your helmet behind your back wheel.

I tend to stop too. But all i can offer is a rather uncomfortable lift to the nearest petrol staion/my mobile.

That said, its better then nothing.

Quite a few times though there has been nothing wrong. But i guy with his bandit 12 once that wouldnt stay running for more then a minute tops. I think it was his oil. But he had plenty in it, but might have not been changed.

Doesnt anyone feel like a condescending cunt tho when they say, hang on, your petrol even on?

Etc.

On Tuesday when I was having my lesson the bike broke down ... well the throttle got stuck and would not start again. fortunately the instructor is a auto electrician so was trying to sort it out (and managed after a while) ... however a biker couple stopped to check if we were ok and other did slow down. Funny thing was the lady pillion was Italian , so whilst her husband and hte instructor sorted the bike out we had a good Italian chat!

Certainly being a female helps ... people have stopped also when I had stopped on the side of the road with the car ... and likewise if it is a woman I would stop ... not sure thought if it is a man ... just for safety ... unless he really had a desperate face!

I always slow down and give the divers 'circled thumb and forefinger' are you OK? sign. If they wave back or return the sign, I carry on my merry way, if not, I stop. If they are lucky, I am on my jawa and am carrying enough tools and bodging bits to fix almost anything given enough time.

I have ridden past folks stuck on the motorway before now but only because it would have been dangerous to try and manouver over there.

Yeah, sometimes you are going too fast to stop safely.

Did stop in the pissing rain for two up on a kwak, just to find out they were sheltering under a bridge Rolling Eyes

To be honest, I won't stop if there are two or more people there. How many people do you need, after all? I assume that one has broken down and the other will help, ergo, I'm not needed.

However, I will always stop for bikers on their own, women on their own in cars (if the road is out of town), and if I see someone carrying a petrol can, I will volunteer to get the petrol and return it to their car/bike.

When I was a new biker (many moons ago) I was helped out so many times I couldn't count them all. I still bump into people at rallies and shows who say "Didn't I stop for you once?"

Very Happy

sorry to drag up an old thread, but i wanted to mention it, and seems silly to start another

my half built bike spluttered to a halt today i was on the main bypass into town, pulled over to change to reserve, and within 30 seconds, i looked up and there was a ZX7R rider with helmet off, getting off his bike walking towards me

i explained to him that it was cool, was just changing to reserve

so thank you, mr kawasaki rider, you made my day Thumbs Up
