Just passed test

Hi, i have recently passed my A2 bike test (within past week) does this now mean that i can take pillions? As long as i am insured to? Thanks

yup, as long as you're insured to and they have a helmet you're good to go.

careful though, takes a bit of getting used to on a 400.

good choice of bike by the way 400 sports are fun

Thanks, the bike is brilliant, quick enough (im actually scared of the power because i learnt on a 125) and not too big. Oh cool, i was wondering if the was a period of time that i needed to wait after passing. Thanks

I learnt on a 125 and had a vfr400 straight after, unrestricted it was quite scary to begin with. Restricted it was a little tamer.

Only advice i can give is to relearn your throttle control, if you pin the throttle like you would on a 125 to get speed up you'll head off like a badly guided missile! And when taking pillions, you need a few more revs to get going and a fair bit longer to brake. Brake too late and hard and your pillion will join you on your seat

You get used to it quite quickly, but thats not always a good thing! great little bikes for confidence building though.

Yes it is restricted, i wouldnt want it not, im afraid of it as it is (and ive been riding for years!) Thanks, cause i havent taken a pillion yet and am kind of nervous about the responsibility that it brings :S

you'll be fine. I was nervous first time, my pillion wasn't!

The only way i can describe it is that it changes the weight distribution (kinda obvious).
You'll be a little shaky for the first few yards, kinda like when you first learned to ride, then you'll get used to the change and be fine. I was ok by the end of my street which is about 30 yards.
You'll notice when the pillion first gets off too

i took my first pillion out the other day and it was wierd to start off with, just accelerate slower otherwise you could loss your pillion after a few miles its fine well thats what i found

I've been pondering this subject. so it really doesn't take long to get to grips with pillion? Theres a few people i could take on the back, its just wether they'd want to be the guinee pig

I've taken my brother pillion a few times now since passing definatley is different..

Round the corners the lean is different.. cos you've got more weight, slow speed is a little more wobbly till you get the hang on it, brake with plenty of time.. the rest should come naturally :DDD

I took my girlfriend pillion about 3 hours after passing my test on a plastic 125!

Now, 8 months after passing my test, of which 4/5 we led up with broken legs I take pillions all the time as a regular occurence, just practice and you'll be fine!

I still hate being pillion myself though! .

No, you just have to state on your policy that you will be taking pillion. They ask you when you take out your insurance.

You just have to notify your insurance company that you intend to take people as pillion on your bike. Not a separate policy. They tend to ask when you're giving them your details, but if you said "no" at the time you'll have to ring them and change your answer.

Increase the preload on your rear suspension or the bike will sag at the back and the headlight will piss off other drivers.

There are a few rules your pillion has to follow too:
- Don't jiggle about
- Don't lean round you trying to get a better view
- Lean with the bike into corners, not against it

If you're comfortable with it, your pillion will probably be happier holding on to your body rather than the grab handle.

Bear in mind that braking takes longer and your pillion will slide down the seat to meet you if you brake sharply. You can still accelerate surprisingly fast but not sharply - roll on the power rather than snatching at it (like any good rider does anyway). Keep your gearchanges smooth or you'll headbutt each other.
