can a bike be submerged in water?

I've no intention of doing so, just curious about how much a bike ca be submerged in water - up to the botto of engine block? Is thre a way of water proofing the bike - i/e. for river crossings?

Up to the Air intake. After that water gets in.

I do believe you get points for getting enough hydraulic pressure to blow the plugs out the head.

You'd have to learn to get the water out in case you took water in (Ewan & Charley style).

Sure, you need a high air intake and a high exhaust, the exhaust isn't so necessary as gas pushes out of it which is the reason why you keep the revs high.

The engine will run badly though being overcooled if submerged, just look at the online videos of landys going right up to the wind screen.

The deep water technique is to walk and pick out a path first as long as it is beneath your waist. To find out if it can be ridden or not. If it can you need to keep your thum bon the kill switch the second you feel you've gone too deep kill it get off and push.

Hell you can just push the damned thing through as several siberian teams did engine off. All you need to do is to take out the spark plug and use the starter or kicker a couple of times and it should force the water out the spark plug hole. The deepest I travelled through in Mongolia was halfway up my hip.

yet to have a l200 do anything near what my Bobtail use to do . or what a Def 90 would do....


the day a l200 outdoes a landy ill sell mine... and by out do i mean a stock l200 or a lifted oen with tyres not one thats been bobbed and had stupid money spent on it..


oh yeah how does a £700 bobtail sound for fun? im sure ypu paid almost that for some wheels and rims for a l200 ....

Iv seen a XLR125 in water upto the seat before and made it across without dying. Did run like shit for a a mile or two but was fine in the end.

when i used to play moto-ball (google it) our practise area had a pit full of water in the corner.
it was about 4`6" deep and used for putting blazing cars in as our practise area was also a practise area for banger racer boys.

one of our lads was trying to teach his girlfriend of the time to ride a bike.
when he let her have a go of his DT250, she shot off in the direction of the pit screaming something about "where are the brakes"!
she and the bike landed in the pit, and the bike was completely submerged right up to the handlebars.

we fished it out and pulled as many bits off as we could and dried them with paper towels (thats all we had)
We then put it all back together, then after about ten minutes of bump-starting and getting the engine to cough, it fired back into life .
the fellow who owned the bike did`nt even empty the fuel tank or replace the gearbox oil.
he just ran it until it was hot and let nature dry it out.

so the answer to your question is yes you can submerge some bikes completely and they will still work

not trying it on my road bike though

as long as your air take is above the water your could go right under the water but its not going to do alot of good for your clock's.

Hi

Getting water onto the HT electrics isn't a good idea, but getting water in the engine is a really bad idea. Quite a few years back I killed a car engine doing that. Came round a corner, saw a puddle and thought "it hasn't been raining that much, it won't be that deep", hydraulics the engine and blew the head gasket out of the side.

As mentioned above, where the air intake is makes a big difference. Exhaust as well but at reasonable revs you probably don't have to worry anything like so much about that.

Few years ago on my FZR600 I got to a deep puddle on my way to work and decided it didn't look that deep. When the bow wave came over the top of the screen I started to get a bit worried.
