Hi

I was given a scooter recently and rather stupidly I have put about 200mls of 10W40 motor oil into it after the oil light came on not knowing that it was a 2 stroke!! I know this sounds ridiculous but I could do with a bit of advice on what to do now!

It is a 2003 vespa 50 cc ET. It has been running absolutely fine since i put the oil in (about 2 weeks). Should I hjust let the oil burn down and refill with the correct oil or do i need to do something else?

Thanks in advance

lmao Laughing Laughing that has made my day.
Personally I'd drain out what's left and fill up with 2 stroke.

No, it will be fine but fill your bike to the maximum with petrol and add the correct ammount of 2t oil as soon as possible.Old 2t bikes years ago all had to run on normal engine oil as there was no such thing as 2t oil back then.

Hi

Thanks for your speedy replies. So i should just put 2 stroke oil in on top of the 10W40? Ive run it on and off for about 1 hour per day for 2 weeks.

Ive been to buy 2 stroke motorbike oil and it is specified as APITC, JASO-FB. Is that the right one to use?

Thanks again in advance.

If the 4t oil is easy to remove then remove it, if not fill the oil tank to the maximum, your engine will not be damaged as you didnt travel any great distance, the only disavantage of running on normal engine oil is that the engine clogs up a little quicker.

Sniff sniff, I smell bullsh1t here because I've never heard of that before. Castrol R is a very old invention indeed, and modern engines won't even run on that.

To the OP, I'd suggest draining down the oil, and replacing it with quality two stroke oil. Did the noise the bike made not give you an idea that it was a two stroke? Wink

No bullshit here Pal, a 2 stroke will run fine on normal engine oil but it will clog the rings and exhaust a bit quicker. Ive rode bikes for years with normal engine oil premixed with the petrol with no problems at all. Castrol R is not designed for everyday use but for racing machines and was too expensive for everyday use . I still put a drop of R in all my bikes fuel 2t or 4 t.

Is that the right stuff?

Well, I've had two strokes for years and I've never heard of that. You also have to bear in mind that premix only oil is not suitable for two stroke injector pumps. This bike has a seperate tank and is not premix... Therefore I'd be concerned that the viscosity of 10W40 four stroke oil would be too high for the pump, and therefore clog it up and cause issues.

Plus you're not supposed to mix mineral and synthetic oils, and modern multigrade oils won't react or burn the same as pre 'two stroke specific' oils.

Looking at the Scott owners club website it looks like they used to use 50w mineral oil, which of course is nothing like 10w40 semi synthetic four stroke oil...

Personally I'd drain the oil tank down and refill it with Castrol TTS or something.

There is no such thing as 4 stroke oil for your information, the oil I put in my 2 strokes gearbox could be then classed as 4 stroke oil but it isnt its engine oil. Im probably a lot older than most on this forum and have been riding both 4t and 2t motorcycles since 1968, because you have never heard of something doesnt make it incorrect. I have rode 2t bikes and run them with either vegable oil if I could afford it or mineral engine oil, the only differece between a purpose made 2t oil and engine oil is the 4t oil will leave unburnt ash but thats all.Modern day 2t motorcycle will not run well on old oils as their bores are designed to run on pure 2t or more often synthetic oils due to their chromium or nikasil bores.

ran fine.....did concern me a little but all was well and i topped up with proper pre-mix asap

I run my ISDT 250cc MZ enduro on a 50/50 mix of Castrol R and straight 30, the gearbox runs on the same straight 30 (silkolene), the bikes near 40 years old and has never seen 2t oil in its life and havent had a seizure or excessive wear yet. On the other hand modern 2t bikes wear out very quickly when using fully synthetic oils and those chromium and nikasil bores cost a fortune to replace so it sounds like a step backwards to me.

Just let the oil run down and top up with proper two stroke oil.

I think most two stroke oil is 15 to 20 weight. The main difference from other oils is the low ash additives to help keep fouling to a minimum. In terms of mechanical protection, normal motor ol should be fine.

Many years ago I found myself in the middle of nowhere on the old RXS and was almost out of oil (the oil light wasn't working at the time). Found a little petrol station but it didn't sell 2T oil. Couldn't risk riding on as I was that low so I figured a bit of 10w40 was better than a dry top end...and the old girl ran fine. Smoked a bit and smelled odd...but did about 60 miles home with nay bother Laughing

Well the thread has showed fairly conclusively that it isn't cut and dried about whether or not you can use 10W40 as 2-stroke oil.

So drain it and refill with proper 2-stroke oil. You know that it's the stuff to use. Draining it is simple, just unplug the hose from the bottom of the tank and drain it into a jug or similar. If you're tight you can use that half litre of 10W40 for something, I would just chuck it in my chain oiler or waste oil drum (for bonfire fun).

Thanks very much for all your help on this. Having done some further research and read these posts it seems that it is not necessarily so much a problem when you use premix, but if it is pumped from a separate tank then there is a risk of clogging the pump due to the higher viscosity of the 10W40.

Thanks again for all your help - I certainly wont do it again!!

Just to clarify.

Ive been using 'pre mix only' oil in my injector fed bikes for ages.... not had a seizure due to lack of oil in forever....

As others have noted they have run bikes fine on motor oil. My MZ250 (which ran 50:1) did fine on whatever i fed it on.

The originator of this thread has also been running the bike on it for a fortnight so I would guess if it was going to die it would have done so by now.

A bloke I used to work with for years when he drained the old engine oil out of his car he 'filtered' it through an old pair of his missus tights then put it in the oil tank of his Honda H100 2-stroke. Smoked a bit but ran for years without any problems. Quite what the grade of this stuff was after 12 months in his sump is anybody's business, not to mention whatever shite was held in suspension in it. Years ago any old oil was used in 'strokers' and they never seemed to suffer. Don't worry about the 10/40, the bike wont notice the difference.

You can use 4 stroke oil in a 2 stroke just like you can brush your teeth with a broom. Remember, just because you can, doesn't always mean that you should. I wouldn't worry about having used it once as its a shit load better than nothing! But i wouldn't get into the habbit of replacing specifically designed oil with something that may or may not be sufficient.

I used to run Castrol R in my 125lc. Never had an issue and smelled great. Now the young lads buy strawberry smelling 2T. No wonder they're all soft as shite and need a good kicking. But I digress from the original post.
I'd drain what I could and replace with the correct stuff. Wink
