What is TOO much power offroad??!!?

Had a go on a KTM 520 the other day and although big smiles every time you even slightly twist the tube and the rear lights up .. it got me thinking it might be a bit of a handful in the slop during winter ...

Now my main criticism of my WR250F is the lack of low down grunt for the slow/slimy/steep stuff, but I think the KTM 520 might be a bit too far the other way?!

What is the BCF offroaders consensus/definition of what is 'too little', 'enough' and 'too much'??!!?

I rekon the KTM 350EXC when it come out next year will be the perfect bike. My 450 exc is really good on the tight bits as there is that much bottom end but even i would ay the top end is abit to much, But the throttle does go both ways ;o

Ah yes the XR650R that was a animal, roosting all the time and spatt me off once or twice.

A 650cc 60bhp bike is perfect for open desert riding but over here you dont need anything bigger than 400cc on trails.

I've found the Yam WR250F to be a very nicely balanced bike for a novice, and for having alot of fun on. Have only ridden one on an MX track and also on a few bits of wasteground. They arn't mega grunty low down, but still pick up well and pull quite hard when you rev them. The WR450F must be all a very experienced enduro/green lane rider would ever need TBH!

Seriously! Is everyone too lazy to use the gear lever combined with clutch and throttle control?

I've used crf250's twice in Spain with tonnes of slow tricky bits, not a problem.
I've used Husky TE250's in Wales. Loads of tricky slow rocky sections. Not a problem.

Yes, you can't have it in top and pull at 5mph but that is the wonder of the gear lever and clutch control!

The TTR I took to Morocco must have around 40bhp+. That was quite alot offroad but it was such a different engine/response/weight to a 40-50bhp motocross/enduro bike. You could just bimble along in 3rd and tackle most terrain, it just made you a lazy rider.

Something is wrong with your bike or you if you can't pull up a steep incline fast on a modern 250 enduro/motocross bike.
