PostPosted: 22:59 - 28 Jun 2010    Post subject: cbt question can i use a bigger bike Reply with quote

im currently riding my 125 on my cbt.

i have a sachs xtc 125 and fancy a change.
ive been offered a fzr 400 which the guy said if i get a rescrictor kit and have it tuned down to 125 performance. ill be legal to ride it on a cbt im unsure but like the idea.
i was hoping to do a restricted access next summer so the thought of using a bigger bike does sound nice just so i can get the feel for a heavier/bigger bike
any ideas if this is correct

ive tried phoning the dvla but never get through

Hi

No, on CBT you can only ride a 125 of up to 11kW. However much you reduce the performance of a larger bike it is still over 125cc so you cannot ride it on a provisional licence.

All the best

Keith

YES you can use a bigger machine provided a sidecar is attached but the horse power must not exceed 14.6 bhp(17 year old), there is no capacity limit in engine size if a sidecar is fitted . Bikes such as Mz 250cc can be used as well as Rotax based 350/500cc with minor restrictions to the output of the engine.

There is NO legal limit on the size of the engine but a legal limit on the horsepower provided a sidecar is fitted, thats the law plain and simple.

Redoko, perhaps you would like a run on my learner legal instructors bike, a 500cc jawa (rotax) with chair restricted (not by much) for your driving test.

What's this about a side car?

I'm confused, I thought he wanted a 400 on a CBT but couldn't, have I missed something or have you missread?

It's just confusing things. Sidecars are completely pointless on a CBT anyway as you can't take any passengers in either the sidecar or as a pillion.

Also, you can't take your test with an outfit unless you have a doctors note or you're disabled, and you would be restricted to riding outfits.

He is right with the no CC limit and only having the power limit and power to weight ratio limits. I felt it was a bit off topic though.

You can ride a 1500cc goldwing with L plates as long as a sidecar is fitted, thats the law. I am an old (very ) sidecar instuctor and know the law on this matter so yes he can ride any capacity of motorcycle provided a sidecar is attached and the bike does not exceed 14.6 (11kw) bhp. Its pointles to restrict a large bike to 14.6 bhp but the bikes I mentioned earlier are ideal for the job and make up for their lack of power with low down torque to pull a chair, its a loop hole that the dvla forgot about but at the end of the day the performance is much the same.

David, you can carry a passenger in N.I in a sidecar with L plates but not in England or Wales, I am unsure about Scotland as regards carrying passengers. I am not trying to be clever here but just stating the facts so no disrespect intended to any of the posters on the tread, its not often an old quy like me (58yrs) can advise or even talk to you young boys.lol Thumbs Up

David, there are no medical conditions that restrict any rider from taking a test on a sidecar, with respect they require a lot more skill to ride than a fly by wire japanese solo by a long mile.

Not really sure the point in wanting to restrict a bigger bike anyway, it's a good £100 - £300 to restrict it, you're better off just buying training for your full test.

Just do the restricted test on a 125 and tell the 2 year 33BHP restriction to get fcuked.

Thumbs Up

I believe it's the no passengers rule in Scotland also. I think it's pretty cool that you can take passengers in N.I though!

I'm not surprised it's different because of the other differences between N.I rules and mainland UK.

Funnily enough after readying your post I went straight onto eBay to have a look at sidecar outfits. I'm not interested in buying one as it would be foolish having not ridden one, but it's definitely on the to-do list. Thumbs Up

I am reading from a few sources that riders must take their test on a solo machine:

https://www.motorcycle.co.uk/Articles/Training/Licence-categories.aspx

What I think they probably mean then is that you must take the test on a solo bike if you want to have the full motorcycle entitlement and not be restricted to sidecars. Either that or the rules in N.I may be different on that one also.

I never meant that I thought that riding with a sidecar was easier than without. I understand the theory behind it and understand why it is more complicated. At the same time, it is different, and just because someone does their test with a sidecar it doesn't mean they can ride without it.

So... being realistic, leaving out the bollocks about side cars and restricting bigger bikes to 11KW = A 125 of up to 11kW is what you need for a CBT. Rolling Eyes

Which means every post after Keiths was pointless. Laughing

It doesnt cost anything to restrict a bike as long as you have a bit of paper that says its restricted, just back of the throotle cables so as the bike cant produce its maximum power then its restricted and legally so as long as you can prove it with a document (dyno) its not rocket science and costs nothing to do bar the dyno printout.

Flip, forget about horsepower as it is only derived from a torque curve to start with, I ask you about horses and horsepower? .....................question Is a big british shire horse more powerful than a japanese horse or an italian horse, who set the standard, think about it before you answer as japanese horses are a hell of a lot smaller than the british shire horse. Also add into the fiqure the point were manufacturers of motorcycles measure their horsepower then compare Italian, japanese and british horsepower, theres a massive difference.
