Removing fly guts from leathers

Me leathers are currently covered in fly guts! What do you use to clean them off?

saddle soap and a bathroom scrubbing sponge (white with light green rough part)

then seal them with more leather stuff from a horse place

Leather wet wipes that I got from Aldi that smell vaguely of lemon.

They're almost dried out so I bought some leather cleaner and conditioner spray from the Pound Shop which smells of cocanut and works a treat.

its the fucking helmet and front of bike that gets them all

Insect guts are supposedly acidic, so they don't do any good to stay in place for any length of time, particularly on leathers and crash helmets.

I usually use a little soap and water to get the worst off, and the wipe with a damp cloth. I then use Nikwax on the leathers to make them vaguely supple again.

I also got some muc-off leather wipes from Hein Gericke which are OK, athough I use them so infrequently that they seem to go dry over time whilst sat in my cupboard.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I soak a couple of sheets of kitchen paper in warm water and lay them on the bug infested areas. Then gently wipe the softened guts away after a minute or so.

I usually leave 'em on, but when I can be arsed to get rid of them I use hot soapy water. Simples.

If I've really got nothing better to do I'll Nikwax after, but it stinks of stale piss so I don't do it too often.

Try that, keeps leather conditioned clean and soft when used as a pair. Its a favourite among classic car people for reviving their old leather seats etc. Works really well on all modern leather too, including car interiors and belts/wallets etc.

Dont use baby wipes, they are very alkaline to neutralize baby pee, not good for a natural hide (remember, leather is dead, not skin!!)

Saddle soap is also best kept for analine leather, and at that, very good quality analine leather, plus, it never soaks in, it just sits on the surface collecting more muck resulting in a mild abrasive paste forming which gets into seams and stitching, making the weak and prone to braking!!

I don't like flys guts all over my gear...especially when i'm queing-up with joe public in the chippy.

I'm using some leather treatment stuff that my g/f uses on her bridles and saddles. Stops the leather from cracking.
