Well known bike place trying to rip me off......

Today I took the TL into have its MOT after being rebuilt from the ground up.
Its had EVERY bearing replaced in it while its been stripped, including swingarm and suspension linkage. Everything has been rebuilt correctly and torqued up to suzuki's specification.

Imagine my supprise when I got advisories on these...

1. Steering head bearings notchy/worn
2. Front wheel bearings have slight play
3. Reear Wheel bearings have slight play
4. Slight play in suspension linkage
5. front brake pads close to limit.

All of the above are brand new and fitted correctly, none have play in or are notchy. In their kindness they gave me a quote to replace all these parts..............................£411.61 including labour.

Im taking the bike for a second opinion at another place tomorrow, and if they agree with me I am rerporting the first place I went to.

Where do these places get off on trying to rip people off?

You see its done the opposite, because I wont be using them ever again. So it has made them lose (a very small amount) money in the long run.

See i thought steering head bearings notchy was a mot failure anyways, as last time my mot man was checking mine for ages, as i did em up too tight

Devils advocate, you are good with all this bearing stuff? What happens if the next place says the same?

Im just thinking if you go in and say 'so and so said this was wrong with it but I dont think it is' surely they are going to agree with you, knowing they will get your buisness next time?

You forgot MOT golden rule #1 that is to only take it to be MOT'd at a place without any workshop facilities. Applies to cars too.



The 50% off an MOT type places are places to avoid as they will always find some fault to get back the 50% and then some.

This means Kwik fit, national speedy etc type places. My MOTs are done at Ged's usually who has no workshop, sometimes speedy because he is trustable and will show you what's up and compare it to a bike that has no problems.

I dont think having a workshop facility has anything to do with it. Ive taken all my bikes to the same place for MOT, as have family members and have all passed without so much as an advisory most of the time.
Its all down to finding a decent tester who is genuine and not looking for faults.
Its easy to find a fault on a vehicle if you really want to. I used to work in a garage so know all the tricks of the trade. If you KNOW the problems dont exist then challenge it and make sure you report any 'blags'.
I despise blaggers, making up work to make cash. A genuine garage will make enough cash off genuine work from a good customer base to not have the need to pick faults out of thin air.

I think the mainland m.o.t system needs to be brought in line with the N.I system as it was supposed to have been twenty years ago, I beleive its a lot fairer as the testers are goverment employees and arent there to make money out of people although the testers can be harder on the bikes and cars at times and it can cost a lttle more.

Down side of the NI system is that there tends to be a very long waiting list, and often the only way to get an MOT in a reasonable time is to get the ferry and use a mainland MOT station.

It all comes down to having an mot tester you can trust. I take mine to a bloke who does bike repairs as well but he is scrupulously honest in his dealings with people.

Im sure its because of this attitude he is never short of work

Generally i've found that little private garages are alot better than others. My local place which shall not be named will pass almost anything. I've taken things there that i know to be fucked, exhausts that are clearly marked for race use only and all have passed. Just try a different place every time till you find a good one, then keep going back.

Sucks man. Loads of stealers out there. You should have confronted them straight away if you were sure there wasn't a problem.

I found a really good place in the end, and they do have a workshop on site. They even make me a coffee while I wait

I also use a small local garage, they passed my KLX300 with no lights besides a front lamp and rear brake light (that doesn't work unless you only use the back brake), no mirrors, no indicators, a straight-pipe exhaust system, no horn, no ignition. .

They will pass almost anything. .

All this MOT crap for bikes, makes me glad I live in Holland where bikes don't have to have an MOT (or an APK as we call it here).
When I lived in the UK, I used to go to a guy who would pass anything, never ever went to the big garages as it was asking for trouble.
