 Posted: 23:08 - 01 Jul 2010 Post subject: What tools to pack ? |
 |
|
I am going away to Europe in approx 41 hours until my boat sets sail for Europe (have to have 2 sleeps in this time so will seem shorter).
Got everything packed - well almost.
Was going through everything I needed and I have just discovered that I have LOST MY TOOLKIT !!!
Dont know where it is, it is the original toolkit which came with the bike. The last (and only) time I used it was to build a BBQ on sunny day and now I dont know where it is.
So I am looking to make up a makeshift toolkit just to do the job if anything going wrong when I am away.
But......
I dont know what tools I should take.
Anyone got any suggestions ? |

Both types of screwdriver, spanners to fit most common bolts on your bike, probably 8,10,12,14 and 17, one for the axle nut. Allen keys to fit any allen bolts you have, usually only one size needed, C spanner isn't really necessary unless you need one to adjust the chain like on a VFR, pliers, spark plug socket and an extender handle. Personally I prefer to take a ratchet and sockets for anything large. |

A friend of mine did a little article for our 'off-road' club and there was a pic as well, but for some technical reason ( )I don't seem to be able to load that, sorry! Here is the list of tools we carry for off-road bike stuff on the go - hope it helps, but think it's much the same as advice ^^ all fits in the Kriega tool roll which is handy size.
1 - Wheel Spanner – 2 different size ends that interlock together to give good leverage and made from aircraft aluminium.
2 – Socket set extension bar – for reaching those hard to get to places.
3 - Spare Break Lever.
4 - Spanners – er……, spannering.
5 - Sockets – correct sizes for all bolts on bike.
6 - Spark Plug remover – new spark plug inside it.
7 - Multi tool – knife, file, pliers, bradle, etc, etc all in one.
8 – Screwdriver Ratchet Handle – good meaty handle to replace useless ones normally get with the bike.
9 - Screw Driver Bits – different size heads to ensure don’t round off.
10 – Thin Gage Wire – great for keeping things in place and temporary repairs.
11 - Spare nuts/Bolts – Used an old 35mm film holder, topped up with same size bolts on bike and Duck tape wrapped around outside.
12 - Red Cyalume – normally for winter but bail out rear light. Can also double up to indicate hazard on road.
13 - Allen Keys – again all allen bolts catered for.
14 - Zip Ties – Different sizes to strap it back on when things break.
15 – Latex Gloves – Stay clean and dry. Good to wear under your normal gloves if they get wet.
16 - Rag,
17 - Safety Glasses – No not for HSE purposes but in case your goggles steam up relentlessly and eye protection required.
Just as an extra, don't forget your hi-viz vest, spare bulbs and docs - everything else should be fine and have a lovely trip!! ____________________ 'The core of a man's spirit comes from new experiences'

I have the Genuine honda toolkit on my pan which does just about anything i need to but also take
Small socket set with 5 through to 15mm sockets, extensions and screwdriver and allen key heads, bought this in Netherlands when thermostat gasket started leaking.
Tyre plugging kit for any punctures and tin of tyre weld for if really in the poo.
Spare fuses, insulation tape, knife, pliers, think that's about it but i have loads of room on the pan and usually overkill it as despite having 2 lots of breakdown cover i don't want to be left standing on the side of a road in euroland, especially when i have someones stuff to deliver ____________________ Nobby the Bastard: How yo tell the difference between the actual japanese and her just screaming because she's had live fish stuck up her arse? Hmmm.... currently I am doing this as I leave for the Alps on Monday
But as I will be doing a lot of the high gravel trails.... couple of extras.
1. On board BMW std kit
2.Set of ratchet spanners to cover the usual bolts - 8-19
3.6" long 1/4" T-Bar - slim 8-13 sockets - set of 8mm AF Impact driver bits(screwdriver and allen key) .
4. Set of long Allen Keys for the bolts on the bike ( more leverage)
5. Set of long Torx key for the bike( it is a Beemer!)
6. Stubby ratchet handle with 1/4" and 3/8" drive and extension bar and uj for adjusting my clutch.
7. Stubby adjustable spanner which goes from 8mm-19mm
8. Pair of pliers
9.small tubes of coppaslip, threadlock and super glue
10 small roll black Gaffer Tape
12. Tampon and Metal Putty ( Fibres from a tampon mixed into the putty help form a laminate that bridges larger gaps)
13.Small can wd40
14. Tire plugging kit and small cheap compressor... I will be letting down and inflating tires depending on conditions so is very handy and runs off the built in power take off on my Beemer.
15. Spare bulb and fuses in a kit I found amazingly in Halfords... all in a small protective box.
16. Small roll of clear headlight tape.( Handy for taping light lenses together)
17. Power chimp back up power supply for phone and or GPS.
18. Mini MAG light and spare bulb and batteries.
Where I am going , as this year I will be solo on a few of the higher roads always sensible to make sure you can get back to civilisation as there is no recovery until you get to tarmac!
All the above go into two small panniers, along with waterproof jacket and extra gloves and spare goggles which hang down the side of my tank and line up with the cylinder heads ... mass centralisation |
