Big Bore Kit, What dose it do?

Tell me what you think of the big bore kits, and what do the do ?

Its a way of adding displacement to your current vehicle
For example the kit available for my bandit 600 would take it to a 850cc
However this work is very expensive, and it usually works out cheaper to just upgrade the bike
The big bore kit can also cause some reliabilty issues

It increases the engine displacement.

It replaces half the engine.

The Half above the crank-shaft.

That's made up of a barel with a hole in it, with a piston that goes up and down inside it.

Big-bore kit comprises new, bigger, barel and new, bigger, piston.

You have a 50cc 'moped'.

A big-bore kit will make it a 60 or 65cc scooter, which you probably cannot legally ride, IF you can only have a 50 becouse of licence restrictions for your age.

It will make the bike faster.

But think about it. Its a 50. It has about 3-4bhp.

Increasing the engine capacity to 65cc, is +15cc over the original 50cc.

Proporionally, 15cc / 50cc is aprox 30% or a third (1/3)

50cc gave 3-4 bhp, so multiply by 1.3, you may get something like 4-5bhp instead of 3-4.

Not a huge difference.

AND if what you want is 'speed'... well.... the more power you have the faster you can go. BUT drag, the stuff that slows you down again & what you need power to push you through, INCREASES with speed, and does so 'exponentially'.

Basically, 3bhp will get you to about 30mph. But DOUBLE the power to 6bhp, and you wont dounle the speed... you'll get to about 45mph, NOT the expected 60.

Motorbike power to speed, roughly, takes 3bhp to go 30mph, 12bhp to go 70mph, 45bhp to go 100mph. 60bhp gets you to about 120mph, but it takes near 120bhp to get near 150.

So your 5bhp, big-bore, 65cc scooter, MIGHT get up to about 40mph, roughly 65/70Kph.

Back to your LAST question, how to make your bike go faster, where you were told buy a bigger bike..... OK, so make the one you got bigger works the same..... but still not exactly spectacular speed increase AND you are still a long way off how fast you might go on a pedal cycle with a bit of fitness training!
