rear shocks for 90s sports bike

I've read lots about shocks wearing out, but where do you go to buy a new one? I can only find hagon in bike mags.

What about front forks can they get up graded, mine need powder coating to.

What is wrong with Hagon?

You can upgrade the fork springs or use a thicker oil.

How many miles has your bike done? Couple of possibilities. Replace the standard shock with a much lower mileage standard shock. Replace it with a shock from a newer bike which fits without any (or too much) modification.

You could obvioulsy buy a Hagon, or something a bit more expensive. But your talking £200-£300 for a Hagon then £500+ for anything from any of the bigger manufacturers. Is it worth it for an old bike you have to ask yourself.?

My suspension was worse for wear, year2000 with 30k on the clock. I replaced the standard shock with a low mileage standard example, replaced the fork oil to match my weight and spent a lot of time setting it up to my weight and riding preferences.

Time and money well spent, but done extremely on the cheap as apposed to splashing out on expensive gear for a 10yr old 30kmiles bike.



EDIT: you asked about uprgrading forks, of course it can be done by the likes of K-tech etc with uprated springs, better components etc but you should be able to get much improvement just by replacing the oil to match your weight, replacing any worn bushings etc and replacing springs if they are no longer in tolerence. Also, I would advise simply painting your own fork legs. Very easy to do with rattle cans for a great finish.

Sod buying a second hand shock with lower mileage. So long as your shock isn't disgustingly corroded or "broken" in anyway, just get it refurbed. New seals, bushes and oil. Should be cheaper than a second hand shock, and give better results.

I had my shock and forks refurbed, to make them feel how they would have done when the bike first rolled out the factory. The forks were pretty good to start with, the shock not so much. The difference it made to the shock was huge, there is so much more damping and it feels alot smoother.

I had mine done by K-Tech. Was about £85 for the shock and about £100 for the forks iirc. That included the cost of new oil, seals and bushes as well as labour.

Racetech do rebuild kits for shockers and excellent upgrades for forks too - bringing older spec items up to modern performance levels.

They're American, but ship to the UK, and I found their products good in the past, and pretty cheap. Hoping to buy some stuff to redo the SRAD suspension at some point.

Cheers, k tech rebuilds sounds good, spending loads on 96 CBR probably isn't clever.

Although while my shocks are off I might powder coat my wheels .
