Perhaps yes.
They could make it so if you've been driving a car for X years the restriction is removed because you will have some road sense.
If i was to do my licence now at 32 years old and get told i could only ride a 125 for 2 years i'd tell them to get f'ed and not even bother riding a bike to be honest.
It's different when you're 16-21 (maybe even a bit older? ) because all most guys want to do at that age is act big and go fast to try and impress their friends and stuff.
At my age not so much. Sure i like to go fast now and then but it's not WHY i have a bigger bike. |

It'll make no difference if it get repealed, since there's a load of new licensing stuff coming through from the EU in the next few years. ____________________ My Flickr |

Hi
Afraid I tend to agree with the basic idea behind the law, although think it is very badly implemented. However would far rather that it was more of a peer pressure system, telling those with little more than a few hours wobbling round some cones that buying a 150mph+ bike is a stupid idea (those with the dodgy attitude will likely be the ones wanting to do this).
That said if there is a restriction then at least make it at a reasonable level (50~60hp, enough for a 500 twin) and make the time limit reasonable (2 years is fine for someone who barely rides a bike, but hideously excessive for someone who has ridden as a learner for a couple of years and who is doing a couple of thousand miles a month after their test).
All the best

But we already do "Direct Access" to be able to use big bikes.
The advanced rider courses are still available it's just that most people haven't got the money to spend on it after just dishing out £600 for DAS training + money for a bike and insurance.
If i had money to spare on courses i might do it yeah. But i don't and i don't feel that i "need" it. Sure it might make me a better rider but i don't believe i'm endangering myself or others as i'm riding now |

Joking aside though, the 33bhp law is one of the worst thought out pieces of legislation in years. When the average copper doesn't understand it then it's probably a bollocks law. The only way to make it police-able is to have something concrete like a CC limit, rather than a theoretical power figure which may or may not require restrictors to achieve. |
Well the limit at the moment isn't exactly theoretical. It is based around the power and the weight of the bike, so is a hell of a lot more concrete than the cc limit. Also I'd argue even a cc limit would be unenforceable by the majority of police officers.

As for it being policed, I imagine that generally it is an irrelevance given that a limited bike can still break essentially every traffic law in existence. I would imagine it is more of an importance to the insurance companies who are liable for accidents and payments on behalf of a third party.
I do wonder though, how the DAS/A2 system affects insurance prices though. There is obviously a problem with a system that determines someones capability to ride, and ride safely, on the basis of the bike they took their test on. ____________________ Bikes: 1998 Honda VFR800Fi, 26,500 miles

As has been said, this all makes no difference as the 3rd EU Directive is coming in soon anyway, which makes it even worse!
It will become:
CBT: 16.
A1 (up to 125cc 14.6bhp): 17
A2 (up to 46.6bhp from a bike with no more than 93.2bhp): 19
A (full licence): 21.
DAS will be 24 instead of 21.
You need to take a test to pass A1.
A test to pass A2.
And a test to pass A.
Mandatory 2 year gap between licences.
However the UK thinks you should have to undergo 7 hours training instead of a test after you've passed your A1 test, but we shall see how it goes.
In my opinion 3 tests + 3 theory tests + CBT + 5 year wait to be unrestricted will kill motorcycling for young riders. . ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

CBT: 27/08/08. Theory: 04/09/09. Module 1: 16/09/09. Module 2: 01/10/09. |

paulington how did you find that out? (if its on t net can you link it please )
Back to the matter in hand, as kickstart said it's harsh on us that do alot of miles on the bikes each year to have to be restricted for 2 years when somebody that only goes out on sunny days and doesn't do half the miles we do, can be unrestricted at the same time as someone who has done a few thousand miles more hence giving them more experience.
I know it could never happen and is would be hard to enforce, but it would be fairer to say you have to ride 5000 miles or maybe more. Then do another days training (more of a check up) to get your full licence. ____________________ Current Bike- Suzuki DRZ400 SM K6
