Direct Access

Hi

Have recently passed my CBT and theory test and bought a Honda GC 125 which I use to drive to and from work for practise, not to mention saving money on gas! I have booked the direct access course and module 1 and 2 in August. I want to practise the figure 8, slalom and U turn and wondered if anyone knew the actual dimensions of the course or could direct me where to find them? Need a rough idea to know where to put the wee cones...

Hey zsars

When I did mine, I was told if you pick a car park and pick 2 bays, side by side. These are approximately the size you need to complete a U-turn.

Your Figure of 8 and slalom, line cones, cans, stones or something similar out on every [i]other [/i ]parking bay line. So you have one cone on every other parking bay line, giving 2 bays per pass.

Just remember to look at where you want the bike to go and in your Figure of 8 the DSA allow you to make as wide a circle(s) as you want. You can use the entire carpark (almost!!) to turn the bike in if you wish, as long as you make the Figure of 8. Don't worry about counting it either, the examiner will stop you when you've completed your second turn.

the cones for the slalom are 4.5m apart, the cones for the fig 8 are 6m apart, and the u turn is 7.5m wide

The u turn, slalom and figure 8 are easy at the test centre, they are soooooo far apart.

Once you've got your slow control under your belt, trundling round the slalom is a doddle, the hard part is remembering to double back at the end around the last two (handily in a different colour IIRC).

Doing it as a DAS, the larger heavier bike makes the slow control easier as its mass seems lower down, and it smooths your throttle and clutch inputs. As a bonus you have absolutley no problems getting the speed through the speed trap.
