im new to bikes and dont know what size im allowed to ride,my friend says up to 33bhp so im not sure

Then you can ride anything upto a 125 14.6 bhp after you have completed a CBT course (compulsory basic training)

Then you need to do a CBT, and can only ride a 50cc bike not capable of more than 30 mph and you must display L plates if you're 16, if you're 17 it's a 125 not putting out more than 14.6bhp, again with L plates.

It's all on the DSA site.....

You don't have to do a CBT if you passed your test before Feb 2001. However since you're on a provisional it's rather irrelevent.

If you passed car test before feb 2001 you don't need to do cbt?
Does that mean my wife never had to do CBT as she's been driving a car since '92?
It doesn't say anything about bikes on her licence and we've been on DVLA site and can't find much on the subject.

You can't ride anything at all. You used to be allowed a 50cc moped on car provisional but that hasn't been the case for a long while i don't think.

In order to be able to ride anything at all you need at least a BIKE provisional. The back of your licence photocard needs to have a bike picture on it. Costs a few quid and takes a few weeks for the DVLA to put it on for you.

Then you can do your CBT and ride a low power 125.

It's also worth checking your paper counter part for category A (motorbikes). As it doesn't need to be on both the photocard and the counterpart (for examples if you've got a full bike license and a provisional car, you won't find the provisional car entitlement on the photocard, it'll be on the counterpart only). However, it does need to be there, else you'll have to contact the DVLA and add provisional bike entitlement to your license (to ride a 11kW/14.6BHP or under and 125cc or under motorbike, but only after you've attained a CBT certificate).

they always add a few extra categories whatever licence you get normally some mixture of f, k, l, n, p, g, & h

check in the entitlements section on the back of your photo card for category "P" if that's there you can ride a 50 on L's with a CBT, but you have to ask for motorcycle entitlement "A" to be added to ride any thing up to a 125
