I've lost my MOT in my 'safe place'
What can i do about this? Im sure it runs out this month! Sad

Get a re-print from an MOT station, I don't think it even has to be the one that issued it nowadays since they're all computerised.

If you think it's due it's normally £10 for a new one

Why not just get it tested if you think it's due.

What disc? Tax disc yes, but MOT isn't a disc

Sorry, live in N.I and I assumed that the mainland had to display their mot disc as well. In R.O.I you must dispay tax, mot and insurance discs.

It is very compulsary in N.ireland in the same way a tax disc must be displayed. The full mot test sytem was never fully implimented on the mainland but I gather the full testing is starting to filter in gradually.

You want to try our M.O.T centres for a laugh, you wouldnt believe how hard they are on bikes if you dont mind waiting up to two months for a date plus you have to pay a retest fee for even the most minor fault such as a blown bulb.

Bulbs can blow on the way to the test centre.

The NI MOT used to be very different to the mainland one. First required at a far greater age (from memory 7 years in the early 1980s) and was far more lax on many things. I assume that they have brought it into line with the mainland one now.

Quite often my father (when he lived there) just got the ferry to Stranraer and got an MOT there rather than waiting ages for an appointment with one of the NI MOT stations.

Quite the opposite as the mot has always been harder in N.I. Cars and bikes originally had to be tested@ four years old and then three years.The problem with mot in N.I is that all testing is carried out in a offical Goverment test centre by Goverment testers and not the local mechanic in the garage down the road. Test conditions are much stricter and if a bike or car has a serious fault then it is impounded until it can be removed via a trailer or van. There are few test centres and as a result there can be long waiting times even for retests for minor defects(up to two months) so a lot of people travelled to the mainland for an mot as it was faster and easier, but since the new system of having to display an mot disc started this has not been possible to the same degree.

Hi

Afraid when I first lived there in the early 1980s the MOT was rather different to the UK ones, and allowed things through that wouldn't pass on the mainland (and failed things that would pass on the mainland). They seemed to be rather more strict on steering and less strict on suspension for example and headlight beam tests only became properly tested in NI in 2005.

It only came in for NI a long time after the mainland and originally for vehicles that were 10 years old.
