Bought my bike on 1st June, was told there was no tax on it, so I taxed it for 12 months.

Imagine my surprise to get a SORN notification through today for my bike, saying it expires at the end of July.

And now I can't get the buggers on the phone, I get lots and lots of "sorry our lines are busy", and when I do get through, I get lost in menus, useless information, and no chance to speak to a person before it cuts you off, and you have to ring back (more "sorrys") to try different options.

It sucks.

All call centres for large organisations suck as far as I can tell.

Their only raison d'etre seems to be to boost telephone company profits. Even when you do get to speak to someone they usually know nothing about anything and just behave as an automated voice for the vdu screen in front of them.

How often have you heard the words "it's not on the computer..."

Arrrghhhh! Evil or Very Mad

I think I'd better go for a lie down...

I am now being told that because of the Data Protection Act, (which I beleive to be a bollox excuse), that they cannot tell me if my vehicle is taxed twice or not.

DVLA rules state they can only answer yes or no to questions, they cannot give out information.

So, by dropping the grunt, speaking to the supervisor (which they first tried to palm me off to their Data Protection department), I now find out that indeed my vehicle was taxed twice for a period of two months.

They now say they cannot refund this money to me, even though they have all the details on computer, as they can only refund valid tax discs for a full month upon receipt of the correct forms (ie any overpayment from August on, when it will have expired).

Bunch of useless, thieveing, buerocratic tw@s.

Nasty email being sent to their complaints dept, though I doubt it will do much good.

Doesn't sound too good Shade. I'd follow that email up with a letter to thei complaints department sent via recorded delivery. Should get their attention.

What demonic says, you have a valid tax disk so don't worry about it, keep trying them but it shouldn't cause you many problems.

Ridiculous! Write a letter to your MP and ask him to speak to the Minister of State in charge of the DVLA to get your money back. That's what they're there for!

One time only, I phoned the DVLA and the phone was answered BY A REAL PERSON after the third ring. I asked my question 'I am considering buying this bike off a scrapyard with no V5 and want to make sure it is not reported stolen' gave him the reg number and he said 'We have no police interest registered in this vehicle sir' Simple as that...strange world huh?

I have ignored all the SORN demands that have come through my letterbox (many of which are for defunct bikes that I have retained parts of...a frame with a V5 can come in handy sometimes) and the demands for fines. The last of these was almost a year ago. They got as far as the 'who was in charge of the vehicle at the time of the alleged offence' form and I have heard nothing since. I am buggered if I am going to fill in seven forms a year just so the government can keep track of my bikes when they are off the road, none of their damned business and I am prepared to stand up in court and say so. No signs of that happening yet though.

Yes the DVLA are a waste of space, and yes that is a bollocks excuse as the data protection act applies to personal information.

All the best

I was registering my bike, I sent off the form, but stupidly imagined that the carbon copy might even be for me to keep.

They sent the form back with the little sticker on the bottom and the assigned reg. number, asking me to complete a new form and send the carbon copy with it.

So I send the new form off, and then they send it back complaining it's not got the little sticker they put on to show my reg number is actually assigned to me... Rolling Eyes. This being the little sticker which I could just forge had I wanted to.

At no point did they explain that they needed the form to have the sticker... the whole mess delayed me getting it on the road by three weeks, the V5 came through a whole month after I first applied to get it registered. Mostly my own fault I screwed it up, but they're such pedants and so useless at giving lucid guidance it takes the piss. My fault for buying an imported unregistered brand spanking bike then... Methinks I'll never make that mistake again.

DVLA Thumbs Down .
