How the hell are you meant to install NTL broadband?

I already have an e-mail account, I already have the broadband installed and working for months... I have a new PC, I want NTL on said new pc...

You'd have thought it'd be a little easier than this Evil or Very Mad

When I plug the cable into RJ45 port on the back of new PC, it recognises there is a connection and says it's enabled and connected, but nothing works.. Now when running through NTL's shite install program (that creates a new f**king account) I can't get it to recognise that the PC is connected to the goddamn modem even though it's FINE.

Any ideas?!?!?!?!

If you install the modem drivers that should be all you need Thinking

You sure you have plugged The Rj45 in to the right socket? You may have more than one Rj45 socket on your PC.

If you only want internet on the new PC and not the old one then you only need to login at the NTL site and modify your account i think.
They recognise you by your network cards address and they're all different so your new card won't be accepted.

Or you could take the network card from the old PC and put in your new one heh.

If you want both computers online you need a switch and then modify your account to work with the switch's network address.

Well its strange that you can't connect at all , as ever time i hook up a different computer via a ethernet card it allows me straight away .. some things to check out

Control panel

Internet options

Connections tab -- make sure 'never dial a connection' is ticked

Lan settings -- make sure that 'automatically detect settings' is ticked

If still no ball game turn off computer , unplug modem , leave for 2 minutes to wipe memory , plug modem back in and wait for constant cable light , turn computer back on and try again .

If able to get on the net then go to https://autoreg.autoregister.net/cd.html
And just register the computer as sometimes it will allow you a brief amount of time before you need to register then it will boot you .. NO need to create another account just go to the site then close it ,, should work if you have already got an account .

If still no game , i forsee a 2 hour phone call to technical support

Yeah a 2 hour phone call of which the 1 hour and 45 minutes is spent in the queue and being passed around the place 17 times.

Yeah sucks major balls , i gotta do it tomorrow , for some reason they have put us on a 128kb connection when for the last 3 years we have been 512 -- NTL are crap , but at least theres no 1gb download limit like BT

I have a router, was planning on setting them up through that, but I'd still need to get NTL working wouldn't I?? that's why I'm setting it up here now so that when I swap the pc's around and run the cable between them and the router, then it should work fine?

Not 100% sure to be honest i know that NTL does not support multi ip's , how many computers are you hooking up ? if no more than 2 i would suggest not using a router and just get a network hub , only down side to that is that you have to leave one computer on .
Otherwise i dont see the problem as long as the settings are as i laid out , you should be fine to just plug the computers into the router and bingo should work .. Are the settings as stated in post previous ??

only thing that normaly cakc the whole thing up is the finding a new ip, so

"UNPLUG THE POWER FROM TEH CABLE MODEM FOR 5 MIN"

and then try again.

from what i remember from installing mine, you have to install the program before turning the modem on/pluging it in, then the screen came up with new account/existing account

What router have you got? Do you know if it supports PPOE.

As far as i know the modem is programmed to only accept certain MAC (Media Access Control) addresses. These are unique to the network card. I believe theres a page on the NTL site where you specify a new MAC address (it looks something like 00-E0-18-F4-29-81). If you enter the MAC address of the router (providing it supports PPOE), you shouldn't experience any problems.

Failing that give us a shout & i'll pop down and have a look.

Ok big thanks to everyone, I had to reset my modem for it to work!

I've got this working now which means I can take the other Pc downstairs, but I still have to network them and install the router yet, so not ALL the way there, but getting there and have learnt loads already Cool

I have a server-like PC doing routing on my NTL connection. Apart from having to reset the modem every few weeks, it works a treat. f

I've had to register once or twice with them this year, I guess its just to allow my MAC address to access the network.

Will be installing a proper router soonish (someones giving me one Very Happy

).

well done.. the big thing i was warned with ntl was if a problem switch off modem it does seem to work..

keep an eye on your bills though they are not consistant

I remember having loads of problems when i did this with our network here and ended up just changing our routers MAC to fit the one NTL had recorded and then it all worked.
We have a Linksys router and it works fine.

Now we're on Telewest (blueyonder) and we never had a problem setting this up. And it's cheaper. And more reliable. Razz

I've got a PC and an iMac on NTL with a router, it took me a bit of effort to get it set up. Most of the time it's fine, but if for any reason the power goes off, or it stops working, I find you have to power up in a certain order for it to work again:

Everything off
power up NTL cable modem - wait about 30s
power up router - wait 30secs
power up Mac, test connnection
power down Mac
Power up PC, test connection

JMy IT bloke did explain something complicated about assigning dynamic IP addresses but I wasn't really listening...all I know is this seems to work!
