2 Strokes and 4 strokes

I don't want another 2 stroke after my last one screwed up pretty quick. But I don't think i'll be satisfied with the power of a 4 stroke.

I was thinking have a 4 stroke for a year then do my test but I'll only be moving up to a 2 stroke's 125 power for 2 years after that.

My friend's also getting a Cagiva 125, and we always go on road trips together.. But I'll be left behind.

Maybe I'm just thinking about this all to much...

How fast do you ride on your road trips? If its only 60mph a quicker 4 stroke should be fine. If its 70+ and you want a 4 stroke 125cc, you'll just have to tell him to slow down.

Try an MZ RT 125 single cylinder fourstroke or a Hyosung gt125r as they seem to be a little bit quicker than the Japanese fourstrokes but then again you shouldnt be riding at more than 45 mph anyway.

Northern Ireland rules. L plates (and R plates, first year after your test) have a limit of 45mph.

Not that anyone took the blindest bit of notice of it when I lived there.

Do test now, get old cheaper 600 (ZZR, Jellymould, Teapot) and spit on him when you ride past since he didn't want to slow for you. (Why wait a year to do test if you'll be restricted for 2 years anyway? You will just regret not doing it sooner, after 9 months of restricted license)

Not sure to be honest with side cars. Think you can ride any capacity but with a power limit or power to weight ratio limit. Worst of it is I looked it up a few days ago and have now forgotten!

The older plates with an I had a decent value, but these days with a Z and not using the smaller numbers there is far less chance of getting a worthwhile NI plate.

Used to be big differences in how insurance claims were settled which made claims in NI more expensive, and was meant to be why insurance in NI was hideously expensive (when I was 17, car insurance in NI was about 4 times the mainland rate, my bike insurance dropped 2/3 when I moved to the mainland).

There still isn't CBT in NI is there?

I am honestly not sure if cbt is here yet although there are lots of training schools popping up so I assume there must be. Insurance has dropped a lot over the years as we no longer have to rely on mainland companies any more. I still have one of the older revised Eagle star policies with an 850cc limit but all my other bikes are insured under classic with 3000 mile yearly limits..e.g FZR750 is only 72.00 sterling a year. The prices in R.O.I could be ten times that amount. my biggest bug bearer at the moment is the fact that some of my bikes are MPH only and I can no longer go down South on them since they went to KPH a few years ago as some of the Gardes are overly strict with the rules.

Back in the 1980s pretty much the only company that would insure you on a bike was Pearl Assurance (who no longer do bike insurance anyway). Norwich Union who had most (~70% I think) of the mainland market wouldn't cover you in NI.

A speedo that shows both mph and kmh is a requirement in the UK (they must show kmh under European rules, with mph in addition being a UK requirement), but once something is registered then nobody on the mainland seems to care.

What are the bikes with mph only speedos? Other than US imports, the only official UK models I can think that had mph only speedos (and they shouldn't have had) are a few Aprilias (RS250 for example) and some Ducatis.
