Private vs Trade? If you had cash where would you buy a bike?

I'm not going to get a bike from a garage I think. Fair enough when you need a finance and are forced buy there, but imho they have way too overpriced bikes for what they are and pretty much all those bikes are sourced from part exchange and as such are probably rather poor condition.

So my question is.. Is a warranty from a garage worth that much that you would buy overpriced poor condition bike from a garage rather than much cheaper and mint bike from a private seller?

For me it all depends on the condition of the bike. you can usually get the dealer to give away some freebies too so its not all bad..

That's not really a good question, is it. Cheap minter vs shitty nail?

A better question is: Given the same bike, is an x% dealer premium worth the statutory rights you won't get with a private sale?

Most dealers are pretty good and will put a bike through the workshop and make sure its ok before letting it go. You can always haggle too. At least you have some comeback if you buy from a dealer. Ive noticed a lot of dealers trade the crappy part exes through ebay these days at trade sales with no warranty so its often the better bikes that they tend to sell though the showroom.

It all depends. Dealers HAVE to make a profit, and its only fair we should expect to pay them mor for the same bike than we would private.
May not seem like they are adding much value, but just holding stock and offering a choice of bikes IS a service.
They ar also subject to consumer protection law, there IS come-back on a bike bought from a dealer, and you should be able to be a heck of a lot more confident that the bike aint nicked or rebuilt from three or four different bikes.
They normally do give it a service and detailing, and put it in teh show-room with a VALID MOt and some kind of warranty.
How much its worth REALLY is dependent on what you are looking at, and how big the difference is.
Yeah, if we are looking at fifteen to twenty year old bikes, like my CB750F2, I know that private I could pick up a nice bike for about £900 where a dealer would be asking £1500, and hoping to get £13 for it.
So is thier service and assurance worth £300ish?
Probably.
If you are looking at a two year old bike, costing say £6K, the difference MIGHT actually be LESS than on the older bike!
Becouse they have probably taken the bike in PX, and made thier money on THAT bike, with the new sales commission and finance, and they can put the old bike in the show-room pretty much for what they gave the seller in PX on the new one.
Its STILL all dependent.

Private if you know exactly what to look for in the bike and have some mechanical knowledge, if not go to a dealer and get a warranty.

Bought my TT from dealer, got restriction and new MOT thrown in. Had a few problems needed ironing out within the first few months, covered by dealer warranty.

All in all, if it had been a private sale (the exact same bike, from previous owner), I would've paid a lot less, but then I would've spent cash restricting it (ca. £200), MOTing it (£28), fixing temp sensor electrical problem and snapped throttle cable (£mostly labour charges probably, as I didn't have a workshop manual at the time).

Despite all this, I will still be buying privately in the future.

Nah, i did this, put the deposit down over the phone, and got very badly stung. Even the MOT was slightly dodgy (e.g. the head bearings were passed despite there being an obvious notch in them). I was lied to in the first place (i asked many careful questions, got all the right answers, but it was all bull), fobbed off when the (many) problems occured and i wanted parts replaced (despite my sending formal sounding recorded delivery letters). The "3 months parts only warranty" meant nothing, because i forgot to sit down with the dealer, read over their "warranty", and make them reword it to be fair (obviously this would have to have been before putting a deposit down else i realise i no doubt wouldnt've got anywhere - not that i would've got him to agree to a proper warranty anyway, he knew he was selling a heap). He had an excuse for everything i wrote to him about, bar the fork seals, for which i was sent some cheap and nasty 3rd party ones (the only part i ever received). Great. I even send the (clean but) duff headbearings back to him, and i received the exact same ones back a week later as the mechanic said "looking like they'd been at the bottom of a river" (i saw it with my own eyes, rusted). He claimed to have cleaned them up. Must've thought he was funny.

It's purely down to the honesty of the dealer and whether you're willing to record the sales pitch and take things into court to stand up for your legal rights (despite no "evidence" of the lies because i didn't think it was necessary to record the conversation i had with the dealer initially i was told it could go either way if i took it to small claims, so in the end i dropped it after a few letters as i couldn't be doing with it).

So private, because i'm now far more knowledgeable, more than a little paranoid and don't want the false sense of security and poorer value. The "dealer premium" seems especially apparent at the cheaper end of the market - which is where i look!

Private every time. Most dealers are bigger crooks than even the most dubious private sellers, trust me.

Just use your common sense. I've been buying and selling bikes for 25 years and have owned something like 160 bikes now. I've had almost entirely positive experiences. Keep your wits about you and always take an objective second person with you when you go to look at a bike, if at all possible.

I can see the advantages of buying from a dealer but i think i prefer to buy private myself.
It's not a problem for me to get bikes fixed if there's something wrong anyway so doesn't really bother me.

I will never buy a bike or a car on finance anyway. If i can't afford something cash i'm not buying it Razz

160 bikes. Are you divorced by any chance?
Every time i sell my bike my wife says i'm not having another one!
Then when i start looking at new bikes she's adamant i'm not having one and that i'm too old for bikes now lol

I can say though that having big puppy eyes and repeated begging helps a lot towards getting things you REALLY want and couldn't possibly live without.
Oh and showing her 10 bikes on ebay that's like 4 grand and then showing her the one i really want which is only £1500 and go "i suppose i could settle for this cheap one then *puppy eyes*.

It's game over for me again. The bike i'm picking up next week will be my last i'm told. I hope i like it Razz

Wow, something I actually agree with cows about!
Dealers tend to professional about ripping you off, while private sellers at worse do it's once a year!

There are some good dealers, generally they do tend to be fairly expensive, but the problem is there's lots that aren't expensive and also aren't good either and it's very hard to tell the difference often.

I prefer private, but sometimes being able to trade in your existing bike can save a lot of sodding about, and it's nice to have a desk to thump should you need it. You have to take each purchase on a case by case basis.

Another thought, certainly in my area - there's not many dealers who'd touch the older/cheaper bikes I'd be interested in, so if you want something decent for a grand or less, you need to go private. Most dealers I've experienced have prices starting at £1200, and that's for the 125s. 500cc bikes tend to start around the £1500 mark.

I use a dealer for new or relatively new bikes. ie top end dealers, not those back street shit holes where they do little more than buy cheap & sell expensive.

Better off private in the cheaper end of the market

Trade.

I can't be bothered with the hassle of selling cars privately any more and bikes look like they'd be even more trouble (test drives, for a start).

So long as they offer me a good trade-in price (and as I ended up at the same place I bought my 125 buying my Bandit, they did give me top book for my 125) I'll take the small possible loss against private.

Was it a CDI restriction? I guess I can understand that it might be difficult doing that kind of restriction on the cheap (I don't know anything about CDI's). Otherwise I can't believe it would have cost you 200 quid to restrict that bike yourself.

My worst ever experience in buying a secondhand bike came from an offical Honda dealer back in the late 80s. I had spotted a must have CBX550 f2, so immediately traded in my old cb400at which I hated and drove the bike home. I though I would check the oil so put the bike on the centre stand and removed the dipstick and the oil was right to the top of the crankcase. I phoned the dealer who played stupid and drained the oil to the corrct level only to find that the timming chain and tensioner were knackered and that the oil had been overfillled to silence the noise. I ended up repairing the bike myself as the dealers would not honour their 3 month warranty, Thankfully they are now banned from running a business due to selling rebadged chinese copies as genuine Hondas.

Private every single time. I don't see the point in spending 20% more for the dubious benefits that a dealer offers. Even if you are paranoid and want some kind of warranty there are companies that will offer them on private sales for pretty sensible rates. I think when I bought the KTM I got 60 days of warranty just because the guy had sold it via MCN (not that I used it).

reasons i buy private:

gsxr 600 bought privately by me
£900
one from a dealer near me
£2100

r6 bought privately by me
£1250
one from dealer near me
£3200

so basically if i had bought a shed privately, which i didn (i just turned them into sheds) i could have bought another bike and still saved a few hundred.

That's what I think as well. For me any finance is a big NO. If it takes me a few months to save money for a bike of my dreams then so be it. I'm not saying it's not tempting to get finance to buy a bike now. But financial commitments I've already got (mortgage, personal loan for decorating the house, wife's car finance) make me very cautious with borrowing more money Thumbs Up

I'll buy privately so finance is not an option anyway.

This is unfortunately true. Ive bought bikes and cars private all my life as I have the knowledge to do so. I made my first purchase from a used dealer last year - never again.
Its not worth the increase price imho. TWarranties unfortunately aren't worth the paper they are written on. Far better to buy private providing you do it carfefully- If your not sure get a friend who knows what they are looking for, or an independant assesment (like the RAC offer on cars) etc, or even see if you can arrange to take the bike/car to a garage prior to purchase to have it checked over.

Ive always had a bit of a hatred towards salesmen having worked alongside them for a good number of years, dealing with one last year made me hate the tw@ts even more!
