You want to buy a tuned two stroke as your first bike? Do you need it to actually get you to places, like work for example? If so I'd avoid it and buy either a standard RS125 or a four stroke 125.
If you just want to go out for a mental weekend thrash, then it might be OK, but make sure you get breakdown cover, and bear in mind that it won't be legal for you to ride it as it will make more than 14.6 bhp or whatever the limit is. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

We met a dude with one of these when stopped for a cuppa (young guy) he loved it to bits, but it was the Second! one he'd had. He said he blew the engine on the first one, and that they needed the best of everything AS & WHEN they needed it = high maintenance!!. l'm no mechanic so dont know how true but! see above! |

1/ its NOT learner Legal
2/ Its more than likely Phucked
3/ Even if it WEREN'T Phucked, and WAS Learner-Legal, they dont make good learner bikes.
Restricting one to 14bhp is cutting the power in half, it would be like ordering a pint and only being able to drink half of it out the glass!
That assides, they are single minded, very focused sports-bike and HUGELY compromised to that task, a bike better suited to an expert rider who can exploit it, rather than a novice who hasn't a clue & needs a bike to give confidence.
They are VERY high maintenence. Whether restricted or not.
To get the performance they do out of an engine that size, they have to be built to very high tolerences, and put in a high state of tune, so they are fragile.
Service schedule includes complete engine rebuilds every 800 miles or so.
The crank & con-rod assembly, and the piston and barel are deemed 'Service Spares'.
I think every-one else calls that 'err, you mean the whole phucking engine!'..... every 800 miles!!!!!!!!!!!
The crank and con-rod assembly cost in the order of £250 a go.
A FULL (to the service schedule) engine rebuild is about £1000 worth of parts and labour.
Few bikes get them.
When the motor starts loosing power and or nipping up, they get stripped, with the INTENT of doing a full-rebuild....
Then they get the price for the crank & rod assembly......
Start asking around to see if any-one can press the crank apart and renew the bearings......
Find out that that is JUST if not MORe expensive.......
They scratch heads, look at the pile of scrap on the bench in front of them.....
Chuck in some new main bearings and seals, and put ot all back together.
Bike runs......
So they flog it on toot-suit to some unsuspecting learner, who thinks that they can ride it on a provisional licence, and laugh at all thier mates on CBR125s or CGT's's while they tear off at silly speeds.........
Thinking that all the vibration through the bars and foot-rests is just how two strokes are........... until they go 'bang'
And the next poor dalt learns how expensive hi-po two-smokes are to 'rebuild'!
If you can afford one of these things, then you can probably afford to buy one brand new.
But dont let the advice of us old crones put you off..... we know nothing, and its quite obviouse that every teen-age tear away with a Hi-Po two-stroke has got it 'cracked' and found the secret to unlocking all that performance, while keeping the bikes reliable enough to rack up every-day mileages, and NOT break the pocket-money budget!
We are just trying to spoil your fun, and MAKE you have a bike thats slow and boring, becouse we dont think you deserve any better.......
Or PERHAPS...... we were once teen-age loons, and have enough melted pistons and sloppy cranks littering the garage to have learned the hard way......

To be fair I've just check out the Superteen regs and they allow very little engine tuning. You can skim the head and that's about it. So it's not going to be hugely different from a standard RS125. (And that's assuming it has had any head work done).
In conclusion it's not going to be a super unreliable 45bhp 125 beast. It'll be pretty normal IMO, the only difference being it's had half the demon tweeks catalogue thrown at it.
You can read the regs for yourself here.

Hi
RS125 does not need 800 mile rebuilds. Aprilia don't even specify a replacement schedule for the rings, just list checking them at 8000km (when most people replace them), and certainly don't list the crank as service item. Barrel should be fine at that time and new piston and rings is about £100 with a few quids worth of gaskets required and a couple of hours work.
All the best

No it wouldn't. I think MME has the latest MIto's in stock for £4000 and it's getting harder to find used CG's these days, even the rough one's hit £450 so to have a nice little 2smoke screamer you buy it factoring in a £500 engine rebuild.

I have a 'classic' DT 125 and a 'Classic' Montesa Cota, I've owned over 25 years. I love my two-smokes.
For high adrenaline kicks on a Sunny Sunday, I'm still deliberateing between a round lamp Mito and a KR1S.
To ME, £500 for a motor buid is 'reaonable'. I'd DIY it, as I trained in the tool-room as a Mechanical engineer, before going on to do my degree and become a rocket scientist.
To your average teenage 'learner' £500 is the price of a bike, NOT an essential bit of routine maintenence!
Few buy £4K 125's brand new. It's just TOO expensive for a 'learner-legal'.
Of whats out there, most are imports brought in when thier age makes them unecconomic to repair / tax on thier home market.. usually itally..... so they get sold to hopeful teenagers here for about a grand, where the rebuild price is a third to half the price of another bike.....
I know, with a mate, I used to import the bludy things!
Only reason I bothered doing the AF1 was I LOVED the colour scheme. Take a photo, invert it in photo-shop the red becomes the majenta and the majenta bvecomes teh red, they are exact compliments of each other!
STILL wasn't enough to get me to 'live' with the damn things appetite for top quality fullly synthetic or its apatite for mechanical attension.
OK, its a latin lady.... but for all the demure looks, passionate embraces and err.... 'adventurouse' antics..... they are NOT cheap to run or good for high mileages, and they have a tendancy like latin ladies to turn to flab, get even more expensive, and start waving rolling pins at you, for NOT giving tem the attension they think they deserve! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

DON'T DO IT
Don't buy RS125 as your first bike. It's not an easy bike to learn on.
Don't buy it if it's the only bike for you and you are planning to use it for commuting. They are poor commuters, trust my 2 year experience with that
Buying second hand RS125 is always risky. You may get a gem or a piece of s***.
Don't buy it if you're skint. Trust me, they are expensive to keep
Reliability can be the main issue. They have highly tuned engines. You can buy the most expensive 2T oil, maintain them properly, warm up before riding and the engine still can pop out in the middle of the road and you will be scratching your head thinking why haha.
DO IT
As a second bike they can be a great weekend trashing material.
Get one if you are rich! It's a great little bike, must have for every biker at some point. By being rich I mean you can afford brand new which is in mint condition. They go for like 3 grand brand new 2009 models. Better than spending 1800 on a sh!tter which needs a rebuild and looks tatty.
