I thought that was correct Sad
All these stupid rules. It's damn near impossible to figure out what you can and can't do on CBT lol

cbt allows a 125 up to 14.5 bhp

if your going for DAS then with an instructor you can be on a bigger bike, but the test must be taken on a minimum of 45bhp or something Wink

Hi

Yep, CBT only allows you to ride an 11kW 125 (excluding odd rules for sidecars).

All the best

So where does the 33bhp thing come from?
Is that if you're over 21?

33bhp* = If you've passed your full test, age under 21. You will have passed your test on a 125

*(actually, it's not a 33bhp limit, it's 25 kW and a power/weight ratio not exceeding 0.16 kW/kg)

I got

Dear......

Hi, thanks for your concern, but if u want to get in touch with your local motorcycle test center you will find that my information is correct.

I mailed him back to say it wasn't, and if he was so confident it was, why wouldn't he publish my question on his ad....

Pisses me of, some poor bugger might get shafted because he's miss-selling his bike. Mind you I spose people should make sure of what they can ride before they ride it...

We also have a certificate of power restrictor fitment stamped by a dealer claiming this bike has a power output lower than 25kW. this alows any person over 21 years old to drive this bike legally with a CBT. THIS RESTRICTOR HAS BEEN REMOVED. Therefore is the full power.

So even if they were right, riding the bike would still be illegal as the restrictors are missing. Rolling Eyes

You'd be surprised though, there are an enormous number of riders around who are riding 1000cc machines on L plates. In the past week going to work I've past 5 of them and there are 3 of them on the estate next to me.

I had a look and thought hold on it doesn't look right as 125cc bikes normally are thinner and have tiny zorsts and tyres.

Itchy get some pics of that, one of my old mates thought he could ride a 400 on L plates, turned up to work on a ZXR400, upon leaving the carpark, got tugged and license quickly turned to nothing. Safe to say he learnt his lesson!

Expired, relisted "due to timewaster" (probably someone rocking up with a provisional and being told that they couldn't actually ride it away).

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110559341104

The line about being able to ride it on a lower license has been completely removed, however the tool is still openly selling an unrestricted bike WITH its certificate of restriction, which should have been shredded. Dipstick. I guess employees of the 5-0 and DVLA aren't able to read eBay listings or contact mobile companies to find out who owns a particular phone?

170 miles out of 11 quid with some left over, eh? Rolling Eyes A quick bit of barmat maths gives me 84+ mpg for that, he must have done 29mph all the way with a tailwind (perhaps fearing getting that 12th penalty point), it's about 50% better than what Suzuki themselves claim.

EDIT: I also love some of the other details having given it a better look.
It's got a clear HPI! ... from 2001. Who knows what might have happened in the last 9 years. Particularly as they themselves supposedly only bought it in '08.
Engine swap with one with far fewer miles ... OK ... the MOT for it is available, is there a matching V5 showing the engine number of the supposed donor, and is it within 12 months of the swap receipt?
Tyres and battery are flat, possibly unsalvagable despite the "good tread", suggests poor maintenance attitude overall, wouldn't you give it a quick start every now and then and keep the tyres inflated in anticipation of eventually getting your license back without having to pay to replace them when you did?
And only 40k miles, on an old F plate? That's from, like... 88/89? One of those, ridden less than 2000 miles a year? What's wrong with it, if not a 5-figure odometer that's already gone round once? I've managed to thrash my L plater through more than 5k despite it being off the road all the damn time with ice, tyre or stand trouble.

Super pedantic I know, but when they've already stupidly tried one thing on, you have to start picking away at the details to not get burnt.

Itchy, it's not just that one of them's an instructor and the others are trainees with restricters neutering them down to a sorry fraction of their true power, and they haven't bothered to get some stenciled hi viz jackets? I can't figure the sense of putting L plates on obviously high powered bikes otherwise, you'd be better off not having them, it'd attract less attention...

Just to clear up if anyone is unsure.

A1 Category Test [17 Years of age and over] - This is taken on a machine of between 75cc and 125cc and allows the holder to ride a machine of up to 125cc and 11kw without L plates.

A2 Category Test [17 Years of age and over] - This is awarded if the test is taken on a machine of 125cc and capable of at least 100kph. If this is the case, the A2 IS technically a full license because you don't need L plates and therefore can use motorways and can ride with a pillion. After a 2 year period of riding with a bike of ANY capacity but no more than 25kw power output (vague as to whether that's at crank or at the wheel) and the power to weight ratio mentioned somewhere above. After this 2 year period, you can ride a bike of any power output.

DAS (Direct Access) [21 Years of age and over] - The same test as with the A2 is taken, but on a bike of at least 35kw, after completion, any bike may be ridden immediately.

Accelerated Access [21 Years of age and over] - If you already possess an A1 or A2 license and are over the age of 21 (this includes if you turn 21 during your 25kw restriction period) then you can take a further test on a bike of at least 35kw, as with DAS, and end your restriction period before the two years is up.

CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) [16 Years of age and over] - This is NOT a test. It is a one day course which teaches the basics of riding a motorcycle. This is required before AND motorcycle test is taken. At the age of 16 it allows the holder to ride a machine of no more than 50cc and capable of no more than 50kph (31mph), at the age of 17, it allows the holder to ride a machine of up to 125cc and up to 11kw power output. ALL WITH L PLATES. The CBT lasts 2 years before it must be retaken unless a further test has been passed. The CBT does not have to be retaken when you reach 17 years old, as with the A2, the restriction is automatically lifted without re-testing. The CBT can be taken on an automatic or manual machine and will allow you to ride either, regardless of which was used in test.

All of the above except the CBT require a valid Motorcycle Theory Test pass certificate and consist of:

Module 1 - An off road assessment of control including manual handling of the bike (pushing it from one bay into another, putting it on and taking it off its stand), slalom, figure of 8, emergency stop (50kph), emergency swerve (50kph), navigating a bend (30kph), slow riding, and bringing the bike to a controlled stop with the front wheel in a designated area.

Module 2 - A short question and answer period and eyesight test. Generally there will be one "show me" and one "tell me" type of question, e.g. "show me where to put the oil in this bike" and "tell me what adjustments you would need to make before carrying a pillion passenger". Then an approximately 40 minute road ride in which the rider is assessed on road safety, awareness, ability to observe real world traffic conditions and deal with them accordingly and confidently.

Theory must be passed to take the Module 1 test, Module 1 test must be passed to take the Module 2 test. Failing one of these 3 parts does not effect the previously passed parts. Only the failed module must be retaken, but it must be retaken before the next can be taken.

Sorry for the information overload!

This is obviously going to be completely useless information for most of the people on the forum but it may come in handy for someone who searches about motorcycle tests on google Wink and at least it's been a creative use of my boredom! and might even clear up some uncertainties amongst those of you who have held licenses for many years and therefore aren't up to date on current test requirements.

Spot on, Glen Very Happy
Funnily I never had too much difficulty finding that stuff out (hint: direct.gov or dsa.gov, and if all else fails, google for online highway code), but there do seem to be a good deal of people out there for whom the kind of research you did is somehow incredibly difficult.

The sad thing is, mate, 90% of the information I just supplied was from the top of my head. Due to my entire life revolving around passing my test and has done for a few months now. But hopefully it'll come in handy for someone, either because they cannot find the information elsewhere (somehow)or because they are confused by how it's worded elsewhere.

True, the week before I did my theory I probably could have done similar... well maybe without getting the categories right (A, A1, A2 ... errrrm... I dunno, I'm going for the full one to get all that nonsense out of the way off the bat!). It's not really that hard to get in your head.

16 (or car license) + CBT - get a moped, 50cc, 45~50km/h, L plates, solo
17 & up with provo bike license + CBT - upto 125cc and 11kW/14.7hp, L plates, solo* ... that's yer lot.

17 & up and pass moped test - can ride mopeds without L-plates & take passengers.
ditto, test on sub-120cc bike - can ride up to 125/11kW without Ls, take pillions (A2?)
ditto, test on 120-125cc bike - up to 25kW/33hp for 2 years, then anything post free upgrade (A1, to A?)
21 & up, take DAS test on over-33kW/45HP bike - ride anything immediately.

It's a simple progression...

Nearly, A1 is light MCycle, A2 is 2 year 33bhp restriction period

and I THINK the DAS gives you "A"
